Biography

JOHANNES WESTFAEL

Birth

JOHANNES WESTFAEL, was baptized on June 28, 1741, at Minisink. Baptism was recorded at the Minnisink Valley Church of Machackemeck (Deerpark), Orange County New York [1]; Johannes died young; Abt. 1742.

To distinguish Johannes, bp. Jun 28, 1741 from his younger brother Johannes, bp. July 5, 1747[2], suffixes (1) and (2) have been affixed to their profiles to prevent accidental merging.

Parents

  • Father: Johannes Westfael
  • Mother: Apolloonia Kortregt

Issue

Johannes Westfael died young and had no issue.

Death

Johannes died young, possibly ca. 1742 [no source]. However he is known to have died sometime before his younger brother Johannes was baptized on July 5, 1647. Death would have occurred in the Minisink Valley region that comprised parts of Ulster/Orange County New York, Sussex County New Jersey, or possibly Pike County PA. These areas were serviced by the Machackemeck-Minisink Valley church. This would have depended on his parents residence at the time of his death.

This is another case where there was no infant death. The 1741 baptism was declared invalid due to a problem with the ordination of Domine Freyenmoet, and the child was rebaptised in 1747 (see Fryenmoet's Invalid Baptisms)

This profile should be merged with Westfael-15.

Johannes Westfael (1), bp. June 28, 1741 was the first child born to his parents with the given name Johannes, he died young and was replaced for Johannes Westfael (2), bp. July 5, 1747.

It is unfortunate that virtually every time we have two children in a family with the same given name, and with near birth dates, people become confused and either merge the profiles or attempt to do so.

Suffixes, like II or III, are normally used to reflect the generational order...and are often used in a families where the family given name skips a generation, however, both persons carrying the same given name are alive at the same time. I suggest that using II or III would lead to misunderstandings...at least, the (1) or (2) stands out, simply because it is not a suffix given at birth.
