Biography

Jeptha was a Friend (Quaker)
This profile is part of the Peasley Name Study.

Jephthah Was born 3d 1m 1760 [3 Jan 1760] in Dutchess County, New York.[1][2] He was the son of Ebenezer Peaslee and Lydia (Weed) Peaslee.[1]

He was disowned by the Oblong monthly meeting on 14d 2m 1781 [14 Feb 1781] for marrying out of unity.[3]

The family was in Chatham, at least by the time of the 1820 Census.[4]

He passed away after 1840.[5]

The following is from Franklin Ellis' History of Columbia County, New York:[2]

"Jephthah Peaslee, the father of Horace White Peaslee, was the first of the family who settled in Columbia county. He was born in Dutchess county, and removed thence to Chatham, at what date we are not informed. He married for his first wife Lois Weed, by whom he had nine children, all born in the town of Chatham. Of this large family Orra, now residing at Medina, Orleans Co., eighty-six years of age, is the only surviving member.

Mr. Peaslee married for his second wife Anna Patrick, and by this marriage had ten children, several of whom died young. William, Robert, and Horace W. are all of this family now living."

Notes

  • Quaker Calendar - There has been much confusion over the dates in Quaker records. Friends used numbered months and days rather than what they considered pagan names for them (i.e. "Thursday" coming from "Thor's Day"). Thus, when the secular calendar was changed in 1752, making January the first month instead of March, Friends began calling January "First Month".
