My name is Channon Marie Moon. I was born in 1971 in Schenectady, NY, daughter of Earl C. Moon and Colleen J. Van Epps. I grew up in Glenville, Schenectady, NY and attended Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake schools. I then moved to Plattsburgh, NY to attend SUNY Plattsburgh where I completed my BS in Psychology with minors in Biology and Chemistry. After undergraduate school, I moved to Geneva, NY and Cheektowaga, NY to get my doctorate degree in Chiropractic Medicine. I have since moved back to Schenectady where I have had my chiropractic practice for the last 20 years. I have a wonderful husband, Kevin Merrifield, 3 step children and 3 biological children.

I became interested in my family history at an early age. Down the road from my parents' house is an old family cemetery hidden in the woods near a stream. It fascinated me. Who were those people and how were they related to me? I did a genealogy project in 4th grade where I did grave rubbings of the stones in that cemetery and my mom helped me look up information at the library about the cemetery.

My serious genealogy research began after completing Chiropractic college when I moved back to Schenectady. I realized my grandparents were getting older and that much would be lost about our family roots when they left this planet. Around that same time, Ancestry.com was starting up and I joined. I first decided to focus on my maternal grandfather's side as a present for him. From here I started collecting resources, transcribing documents and creating an extensive database of my grandfather's tree. The tree began to expand with stories and pictures. I put all these things together in 1998 and created the "Van Eps Family Genealogy" web page on rootsweb. During this time, I also worked on my other family lines and took some trips to Michigan and Pennsylvania to gather information there too. I continued consistently researching, transcribing and updating my page until around 2005 when my life started to go through big changes.

Over the last year, my interest in my family tree has returned with a vengeance. My adopted husband found his birth families with an Ancestry.com DNA test. I decided to take one too! This opened up a whole new avenue for research for me. I have since started breaking through some long standing brick walls in my tree. And now I am passing on all my information to my own children and first grandchild!

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships by comparing test results with Channon or other carriers of her ancestors' mitochondrial DNA. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Channon:

Hello, I just joined this site and the New Netherlands project. I'm writing you because you seem really authoritative about this stuff. I am seriously stuck on the Palen part of my family tree (Maxwell Palen to be exact) and I was wondering if you knew of any historical research centers in Dutchess and Ulster counties that I should visit. His obit says he was from Greenfield, New York but that could be Greenfield Park, Ulster. I'm looking for resources that aren't available online. I've read baptism record after baptism record and I found tons of Palens, but no Maxwell. A DNA test put me right with the Dutch Palens of New York (VanVliets, VanEtten, Roose, Middagh.) I'm wondering if you knew of resources that aren't typically available on Ancestry.com or with LDS. Thank you so much!

Channon --

You may have been hard at work adding family members and getting connected to those that are already here. You probably have at least a few profiles that you manage now. So, this week we're going to look at how to work with your Watchlist: How to Manage Your Watchlist.

As always, your questions are welcome!

It's time for your next stop on the guided tour!

This week, we'd like to show you How to Join in the Community. There's no shortage of opportunities to get involved through social media, our forum, and projects.

Be sure to check out the One Name Studies Project to see if anyone has started a project for one of the surnames in your family. Don't see one? Follow the instructions for starting your own!

Please let me know if you have questions. :-) If the above link does not work from your email, please go to your profile in the public comments and it will work from there.

Thanks, WikiMessenger Cindy

Hello Channon!

Welcome to the New Netherland Settlers Project. Please visit our FAQ and feel free to ask any questions you may have. If you're looking for your ancestors that might already be on Wikitree, check out our Immigrants and Progenitors page, though it is not quite complete and does not reflect all of the profiles that already exist. Lastly, here's a quick guide to sources that might help you in your search.

Cheers! Carrie

Hi Channon,

I'm a WIkiRanger working the current shift.

Thanks for the work you're doing in connecting the Joy/Mann/Stoddard family. Please remember to add sources to the profiles to support those relationships, even if they're family sources (examples). This is especially important when working on profiles managed by others.

Thanks for sharing!

Hi Channon,

You should be able to import your Gedcom into a program and then create another GedCom with the persons that you want to put into the program. Check out RootsMgic where you can import your entire GedCom into their program. Make sure you look over your info and use the same names for locations to prevent lots of extra work on cleanup! You can load a sample of Roots Magic (RootsMagic.com) for free to try it with a Sample GedCom file. RG
