Benjamin was born on 7d 5m 1745 [7 Jul 1745] in Dutchess, New York.[1] He was the son of Richard Smith and Dorothy (Potter) Smith.[1]

He was disowned by the Oblong monthly meeting on 17d 9m 1767 [17 Sep 1767] for marrying out of unity.[2]
