This profile is for Francois or Franz le Roy, who was the husband of Celetje Janse Damen (bef.1683-1759).

Franz settled at or near the present site of Albany, New York, where there was a considerable colony of Huguenots under the leadership of Lois Du Bois known as "Louis the Walloon," who had himself fled from France to Manheim in 1658 and from there to America in 1660.[1]

Some of the descendants of Franz Le Roy Germanized the name into "Koenig" and later Anglicized it to "King." Bergen in his "Early Settlers of Kings County" makes the curious mistake of supposing that Franz Le Roy's wife Celia Jane Damne was twice married, first to Franz Koenig and later to Franz Le Roy, because his name is given in the two forms of the Dutch records of baptisms of his children.[1]

Francois "Frans" Leroy was born on October 7, 1683, in Kingston, New York to Simeon Leroy, 46, and Claudina/Claudia D'Eschalets, 32. He married Celetje Damen in 1701 in his hometown. They had nine known children. He died on December 22, 1759, in Poughkeepsie, New York, at the age of 76.

Excerpt from Olive Tree Genealogy

"Frans LeRoy Capt. was born in 1683 in Kingston, Ulster County, New York or Albany, New York. The LeRoy family of Dutchess County, New York is descended from Capt. Frans LeRoy. He was named after his maternal grandfather. In 1709 he bought land in Poughkeepsie New York north of the Fall Kil from Myndert Harmenszen van de Bogart who was the original patentee. Franz and his wife are present there on the 1714 census which reported them as residents with 3 boys, 2 daughters, and 3 slaves. In 1719 Frans bought more land along the Fall Kil east of his property. In 1719 Frans was appointed assessor. He served again in 1723 and 1727-1728.
He was active in the militia as ensign and as Captain. He and his wife were early members of the Dutch Church. He became a Deacon in 1720 and an Elder in 1739. Frans made his will December 22, 1759. He divided his property between his 6 children and the daughter of his deceased son, Frans jr. Until the formation of the church in Poughkeepsie, baptisms were recorded at Kingston. It is assumed that all but Frans' first 2 children were natives of Poughkeepsie, New York.
He was married to Celetje or Celia Damen in 1705. Celetje or Celia Damen was baptized in New Utrecht, New York. New Utrecht is now part of Brooklyn, New York."[2]

Text from Previous Version of Biography, Believed to Be Incorrect

For the reasons provided in Research Notes, the following text may be incorrect:

"Franz LaRue, son of Abraham and Jeanne DuFour Leroux, was born at Mannheim in the Palz (Palatinate), Germany. Sometime near 1680, Abraham, Jenne and their sons Franz, Jacques, and Abraham were among the Huguenot families who fled the turmoil in Europe by emigrating to the Huguenot settlement in New York. [1] Abraham's father died on the ship and was buried at sea.[9]" ...

"...his sons, Jonas and George went with the Ferrees to the Conestoga valley, and later located in New York and Lebanon counties. He was also probably the father of Abraham LaRue, who settled near Mifflinburg, in 1754, though tradition makes him a brother of Jean Jacques Le Roy, who was killed by the Indians in 1755, and his daughter Barbara carried into captivity as related by her and made part of the state archives.[1]"

Research Notes

The man previously represented by the profile at Franz La Rue (1664-) and now merged into this profile seems to have been intended to be the same person (same wife, similar biography) but his parents were incorrectly named. There is no evidence that Abraham Leroux (1632-1666) and Jeanne DuFour (1635-bef.1683) had a son named Franz or similar; their children have baptism records and they were not married long enough to have had many more children whose baptism records could have been lost. Also, both Abraham and Jeanne died in Mannheim.

Another man who is said to have died on board ship (more persuasively, but yet to be proven) was Pierre LeRoux (abt.1634-1672). There is no indication that Pierre LeRoux (abt.1634-1672) was related to this man. Although there are a number of variants of both names, the last name le Roy is not the same as the last name le Roux (or la Rue), and they are not pronounced similarly.

The Jonas referred to above who went to the Conestoga Valley with the Ferrees was Jonas le Roux (abt.1680-abt.1760) and also not related to this man.

The George referred to above was probably the son of the above Jonas, who was born August 2, 1709 on the Hembshof in Oggersheim and died in Pennsylvania, maybe about 1739 (no profile).

I don't think there is a profile yet for the Jean Jacques Le Roy, who was killed at Penns Creek in 1755, and I don't think his parents are known. There was also a Swiss clock and watchmaker named Abraham le Roy who died in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania in 1764 (no profile for him either).

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Francois by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Francois:

See https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Template:Huguenot_Ancestor - that sticker is now retired. The template page suggests replacing it with "Huguenot Emigrant," "Huguenot non-Emigrant," or "Huguenot Protestant Ancestor".

La Rue-36 and LeRoy-590 appear to represent the same person because: See explanation in the Research Notes on page for La_Rue-36.

I think some of the information in this profile needs sorting. I just added a research note regarding some of the apparent confusion. I'd like to update the profile and propose a merge with Francois LeRoy (abt.1683-abt.1759). Any objections?
