Nicholas Breakspear was born in Abbot's Langley (Hertfordshire).[1]
He was elected pope on 4 December 1154 and crowned on 5th December taking the name Adrian IV.[1] He is the only Englishman to be elected pope.[2]
In 1155, a Papal Bull from Pope Adrian IV granted Henry II of England the right to invade and govern Ireland, and to enforce the Gregorian Reforms on the Christian Church in Ireland. [3]
