Mary Alice Seddon was born in late 1876/early 1877 in Leigh, Lancashire, England, [1] the daughter of James Seddon and Hannah Kearsley.
Her mother died and her father remarried.
In 1891 a farmer's assistant, she was living with her father, mother and step-siblings in Bedford, Lancashire. [2]
