Biography
Although born in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, my parents had only recently moved to the area. After my first sister was born, my Father changed jobs and our small family moved to central New York State, where two more sisters were born for a total of 3 sisters.
Being slow with my first words, it was realized that I had a mild speech impediment, which could explain initially mediocre grades in elementary school. However, by 5th grade, with speech problems resolved, my academic potential started to be recognized. I was extremely active with newspaper routes and participated in both Cub and Boy Scouts, achieving the rank of Eagle Scout and eventually worked as Boy Scout Camp counselor. By 7th grade I began to self study science and math including special and general relativity. I then won a county wide Math contest while only a Sophomore in High School and also ran and lettered in Cross Country, Indoor and Outdoor Track. Best half mile time was 2:04.
I graduated from Cornell University with a Chemical Engineering major and participated in the collegiate Cycling team, winning the Eastern Class B road championships in 1978. Continued with Senior Road Race Championships at district and state level and in 1979 finished 15th in National Senior Road Race Championships.
While a Junior at Cornell, I learned of the nuclear accident at 3 Mile Island in and in response took several Nuclear Engineering courses. After graduation, I accepted a position with the Niagara Mohawk Corporation which was both operating and constructing nuclear power plants. Served as a Chemistry Supervisor while leading the initial startup and test Chemistry program. Eventually switched to Reactor Engineering; currently Principal Reactor Engineer - Nine Mile Point Nuclear Power Station. Licensed Professional Engineer - New York State with Nuclear Engineer Certification from General Electric as well as Qualified Root Cause Investigator. Emergency duty as Qualified Core Thermal Hydraulic Engineer.
Married and father of 3 wonderful daughters. No grandchildren, but have met my first son in law and several boyfriends.

My most distant known Ross ancestor was born in Scotland, near Inverness. However, I'm closely related to the Chiefly branch of the Loch Alsh Matheson's and a few members of the MacKenzie Clan. Further back in time, my haplogroup is primarily Norse and before then from the Danish Island of Zealand.
The first Earl of Ross, Feacher MacinTagart, was of the O’Beolan family.
Icelandic, Scottish and Irish sagas speak of King Bjolan, a half Norse king of South Lagore in County Meath, Ireland and the Applecross district of Wester Ross. He is said to be the son of Helgi Bjolan, a Viking of Norse nobility and importantly a Christian convert – who was the son of Kitell Flatnose, Norse King of Mann and the Isles. Kitell was in turn the son of the Björn "Buna", a petty King of Norway. King Bjolan’s mother is said to have been an Applecross princess of direct descent from the Kings of Tara.
It is probable that the name "O’Beolan" is Gallicization of the Norse name Bjolan. It should also be pointed out that that Björn Buna is generally understood to be descended from the Skjöldr, the Danish royal lineage who are also known as the Scyldings described in Beowulf.
In 793, Norse Vikings began to raid the British Isles. Eventually, they established a Kingdom in Dublin that was ruled by Uí Ímair dynasty; distant relatives to Bjorn. By 950, the Kingdom included parts of Ireland, the Isles, Western Scotland and Inverness, Ross & Cromarty. In 1098, Magnus III, King of Norway, ravaged the Hebrides and killed the Norse leaders. The Applecross peninsula though was part of the mainland and was likely spared the worst of the slaughter.
The O'Beolan family had possession of the monastery at Applecross in Western Ross shire. Eventually, one man; Fearchar mac in tSagairt gained favor with the King of Scotland by putting down a rebellion in Easter Ross. In return, Fearchar became the Earl of Ross and settled his family in Ross shire near Dingwall. However, he continued to maintain connections with relatives in Norway and on the Isle of Man. Over time, the earldom was lost from the family, and my ancestors became Chiefs as well as members of the greater Clan Ross.
Some of my Ross relatives participated in large scale military battles near the year 1650, where they were taken prisoner, marched towards London and shipped over seas. Other Ross relatives fought with the 78th Fraser Highlander Regiment, capturing Montreal in 1760. My direct ancestors however, remained in Scotland near Tain, Inverness and Elgin.
Eventually my Great Great Grandfather emigrated around 1850 to Jamaica, where his first wife passed leaving him with a daughter. He then emigrated to Canada, worked as a Clerk, remarried and eventually fathered a dozen children. After serving with an Indiana regiment in the American Civil War, he lived briefly in Chicago briefly before finally settling in the New York City area.

I thought we might be related through the Ross line and perhaps we are but according to the relationship finder we are 15th cousins 3 x removed through another line. I doubt DNA would be strong enough that far back and I can't verify all the ancestors attributed to me, past GG Grandparent.
I was lead to you as you manage my Grandfather's profile, John Clunies-Ross.

Yeah; would could be related thru the Ross line. I've adopted a number of orphaned Ross profiles especially from Scotland.
I looked over the associated Ross (and Clunes) profiles and see that a John Ross is recorded on the isle of Yell in the Shetlands ~1640's or so. There were a good number of Ross men leaving Ross Shire during that general time period.
I've done YDNA testing and match Ross men who have good reason to believe we are from Ross shire. Our common ancestor lived around 1400. That works out to about 19 generations.
Further back in time (about 40 generations) we are descended from the Norse, so long history of nautical pursuits and easy to see how a Norse Ross man may have found Yell/Shetland a better place to live.

I haven't heard back from you regarding the Scotland Project Check-in. I hope you are well and look forward to hearing from you soon.
Things are going well. I have just returned from a 9 day trip to the Scottish Highlands. Actually visiting, walking and driving between various Highland sites has helped me better understand some of the historical events. Primarily, I'm monitoring Family Tree YDNA projects for Ross, Matheson, Mackenzie & MacRae surnames as well as a few others including the Hamilton project. Although Hamilton is a Lowland family, and they are not interrelated to my Highland roots, they are so prominent and numerous that the YDNA provides useful clues and has helped guide an appropriate challenge of some inappropriate genealogical work which was on WikiTree.

This year we are hoping to learn what our membership would like to accomplish over the next 12 months. In case you aren't aware, this year is WikiTree's ""Year of Connections"" and the Project's leadership would like to contribute to this in as many ways as possible.

Scotland Project Leaders check in with you at least once a year to see how you are doing. With the changes happening around the world, we understand that life is hectic right now.
What are you planning to work on for the Scotland Project this year? Are you happy with the team(s) you part of, or would you like to make some changes?
This time round, we’re also looking for feedback on the use of Google Group and Discord. Do you use one or both of these? If you don’t use either of them, what is the best way to ensure you receive Project communications? If you would like to join us on Google Group or Discord, let us know in your response.
Emails from the google group are received, but they are hard to follow as much of the discussion deals with other aspects or areas within Scotland. Not familiar with Discord.
Hopefully, will be able to host a tent at Highland and Celtic festivals in my area with displays of genealogical information that I've complied.
