Travis Baldwin has an interest in Clan Gunn, part of the Scottish Clans Project.

Birth

I was born on April 28, 1951, at Mountain State Hospital in Charleston, West Virginia just after midnight. My great grandfather, Benjamin Baldwin, told my mother that he would give me a silver dollar if I was born on his birthday (April 27). Obviously, I didn't meet that deadline and have one dollar less in my back account than I should have.

I grew up on Fisher's Branch, a small hollow off of Tupper's Creek Road in Kanawha County between Charleston and Sissonville, in a modest single-story house with three bedrooms, one bathroom, a kitchen and a living room. I shared this home with my sister and my parents until around 1967 when Interstate 77 purchased our property and we moved to Whittington Road South, approximately 5 miles away.

"Childhood"

My father, Arthur, was employed as a glazier at Libby Owens Ford Glass Company in Kanawha City, as was his father and some other family members. My mother, Lura, worked for the Kroger Company initially. When I was in my later elementary school years she worked in downtown Charleston at the O.J. Morrison department store, the Piece Goods Shop, and The Diamond department store (as a seamstress in the bridal department). Prior to marriage to my father she was employed at Union Carbide in South Charleston.

In addition to their employment, my parents tended a large garden raising corn, green beans, peas, onions, leaf lettuce, potatoes, turnips, sweet potatoes, kale, peppers, tomatoes, summer squash, cabbage, and cucumbers. Once these things were harvested some foods were either canned or pickled, and green onions were sold to the Kroger Company. We spend a lot of morning hours tending the garden during the spring, summer, and early fall. In addition, we raised cherries, strawberries, pears, and a variety of apples.

One year we raised a calf to raise for beef. My sister and I turned it into a pet and we refused to eat any of the meat when it was taken to the slaughter house. Another year we raised a couple of pigs for slaughter as well. Sometimes we also raised chickens for fresh eggs and meat. Other items were purchased at the grocery store, but, oftentimes we purchased fresh milk from a neighbor. The bakery truck would deliver baked goods, although my mother often baked her own fresh bread. There is nothing better than waiting for the fragrant bread to come out of the oven, cool enough so that it could be sliced, slathered with butter, and consumed around the kitchen table. Mom made her own tomato juice. Sauerkraut, pickled corn, and dill pickles, were preserved in large crocks with lids. She also made strawberry jam, apple butter and sweet pickles. Sorghum molasses would be purchased by gallon jugs, brought home fresh in the fall when molasses was made by local farmers.

Education

I attended Wallace Heights elementary (Grades 1, 2-6), Union School (a two-room school with 6 grade levels during my 2nd year), Sissonville Junior High School, and graduated from Sissonville High School in 1969. My next four years were spent at Marion College (now Indiana Wesleyan University) where I earned a bachelor of science degree in social studies and secondary education.

Employment

Upon returning home to West Virginia in search of a teaching job. No jobs for social studies teachers were to be had at that time in Kanawha County, so I found employment in sales at Palmer's Shoe Store on Capitol Street in Charleston (now part of Taylor Books) and, after one year, was promoted to assistant manager. The following year I found employment at Charleston General Hospital as a critical care technician working primarily in ICU. I transferred to Charleston Memorial Hospital to work in the cardiac care unit (CCU) for two years. Subsequently, one of my former nursing supervisors contacted me and asked if I would be interested in taking a job as a case worker for the Kanawha County Court at Highland Hospital, and I accepted this position working with the chronically mentally ill. This was a good fit for me due to my minor in sociology.

Several months later, the unit I was working in merged with Shawnee Hills Community Mental Health Center and I continued there as both a case worker and the supervisor of the case manager program for the next 6 years. Part of my duties consisted of discharge planning for chronic patients who were returning to the community from Lakin, Weston, Huntington, and Spencer state hospitals, supervising 6 other case managers, and maintaining a personal caseload of challenging patients as well. It was during this time that I enrolled at the WVU College of Graduate studies to obtain a master's degree in Special Education with a concentration in behavioral disorders. It was also during this time (September 1981) that I married Ann Whittington, a psychiatric nurse who was employed at the mental health center as well.

Hi Travis,

It is once again time for our annual Scotland Project check-in. Please respond within the next three weeks to let us know:

•If you would like to continue as a project member •If you are happy with your current teams or would you like to join a different team •How much time per month (on average) you spend working on Scottish profiles •Anything you’d like the Scotland Project to do more of in the future

You can respond to this message by posting a reply below or sending me a private message on WikiTree. If we don’t hear from you within the next three weeks we’ll assume your interests have changed or you are no longer able to participate in the Scotland Project at this time, and your badge will be removed. If your circumstances change later you will be welcome to reapply for membership.

On behalf of the Scotland Project, I would like to thank you for your commitment to the project's goals. Every single contribution you make helps improve Scottish profiles!

It's time for our annual Scotland Project check-in!

This year we are hoping to learn what our membership would like to accomplish over the next 12 months. In case you aren't aware, this year is WikiTree's ""Year of Connections"" and the Project's leadership would like to contribute to this in as many ways as possible.

We would appreciate it if you would share your thoughts and ideas with us on how we can accomplish this goal. We would also appreciate it if you would provide some feedback on our existing goals, including:

  • If you have not yet signed up to help on one of the project's teams, which team(s) would you be interested in joining?
  • How often should we provide a Project Newsletter?
  • Have you participated in the Tartan Trail? If not, is this something you'd be interested in doing?
  • Do you have a question(s) that we could add to a Frequently Asked Questions page?
  • Any suggestions or ideas you have on ways to improve the Scotland Project in general

We continue to communicate with our Project members via Google Group (official) and Discord (unofficial), as well as G2G. You may also reach out to any of the Project leaders via WikiTree's internal messaging system at any time.

Thank you for all you do to help the Scotland Project become a knowledge hub for Scottish genealogical research! We wish you all the best in 2022!

Sincerely, Amy Gilpin on behalf of the Scotland Project Leaders

Hello

It’s time for a Project check-in!

Scotland Project Leaders check in with you at least once a year to see how you are doing. With the changes happening around the world, we understand that life is hectic right now.

What are you planning to work on for the Scotland Project this year? Are you happy with the team(s) you part of, or would you like to make some changes?

This time round, we’re also looking for feedback on the use of Google Group and Discord. Do you use one or both of these? If you don’t use either of them, what is the best way to ensure you receive Project communications? If you would like to join us on Google Group or Discord, let us know in your response.

Hi Travis,

On November 4 you created another duplicate William Burgiss, for which I have proposed a merge. Please be more careful not to create duplicates.

Thank you.

Hello Travis,

Thank you for responding to my email. I am going to post at least two profiles that you listed that are NOT on the tree that you sent to me. These profiles show you as the PM and are recent: 1) https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Pooke-34 This is the Lady Ellen Pooke that you created on 6 November 2020. She does not have a title. She is not Lady Ellen Apooke or Apuke. She already has a profile (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Apuke-2). She married Richard Baldwin. One of their children was Henry Baldwin, who married Alice Kinge as I mentioned below. 2) https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Baldwin-13447 This is the Henry Baldwin that you created on 6 November 2020. This is the Henry Baldwin who married Alice Kinge and they were the parents of the Aston Clinton Baldwins as I mentioned below. I have no idea how or why you are creating/duplicating profiles that already exist, but it needs to stop as it is very time-consuming and frustrating to try and merge these again. I strongly recommend you work with Vicki, or another WikiTree mentor who can guide you along.

I looked at your tree and it looks like your Baldwin line originated in Oxford, England. Oxford is about 25 miles west of Aston Clinton so I have no idea why you are creating profiles for Baldwins that already exist in Aston Clinton. That may seem a short distance now, but it wasn't in the 16th and 17th centuries. Some of the Baldwins from Aston Clinton could have migrated to Oxford and married there then those Baldwins could have migrated to the colonies. Vice versa is unlikely as the Aston Clinton Baldwins migrated to the colonies or elsewhere in England. I would strongly recommend that before you go any further with any other Baldwins, you add Biographies and in-line sourcing to some of your existing people (e.g., https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Baldwin-13438). Where was William from and where did he die? Where is your source (evidence) that he married Mary Wimbish? 'Family Source' isn't enough. Same with https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Baldwin-13440 and Mary Beale. It looks like you descend from the Pennsylvania Baldwins. FTDNA has a Baldwin name study that you would find useful.

Hi Travis,

I just sent an extensive email regarding your duplicate profiles on Wikitree. These include Ellen Apuke (alias Apooke) and Henry Baldwin. These Baldwins are from Aston Clinton, Buckinghamshire, England and several have had profiles for nearly 10 years. You need to check listings of people who 'pop up' when you are creating a new profile. If one is already listed, then STOP as this tells you a profile already exists. A profile for the Henry Baldwin you created already exists. He was married to Alice Kinge and they are the progenitors of most of the Aston Clinton Baldwins. You might want to turn to several of our excellent mentors before you go any further. Passing the pre-1700 exam is not a strong preparation for working on pre-1700 profiles. They need biographies and in-line sourcing. Family Sources" are not sources. Thank you!

Please STOP creating duplicates.

Thank you

Travis,

Duplicate profiles create a lot of work for others to clean up. Please be careful. Thank you. Cheryl Skordahl PGM Leader

Travis,

Please use extra caution when creating new profiles associated with the Mayflower, or in the pre-1700 timeframe. You have created numerous duplicates. Please don't reject the suggestions WikiTree gives you when creating a new profile; I found at least two that were definitely the same.

I also notice that none of the profiles you created recently have sources. Please remember that on WikiTree we add sources. Thank you, S Willson Arborist

Hi Travis,

Sorry for all the merge proposals, but, WikiTree is a different kind of Family Tree site. Each person is represented by ONLY ONE profile. We share our ancestors as our mission is to build a SINGLE family tree. IF you have questions, please ask.

Hi Travis,

Would you please re-read these Pre-1700 instructions: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Pre-1700_Profiles#Cite_reliable_sources You have been creating many pre-1700 profiles with "Family Sources" as your only source. Please don't create any more pre-1700 profiles without sources. And please go back and add real sources to the profiles you've already created. Thanks!

Congratulations on being Pre-1700 certified.

Because pre-1700 ancestors are shared by many decendants, coordination is essential. Thanks for joining the SCOTTISH_CLANS Project.

Hi Travis,

This is a courtesy e-mail to see how things are going. Are you enjoying WikiTree so far?

I see that your GEDCOM loaded OK. Do you have questions about the GEDCOMpare process?

Have the tips in the New Member How-Tos been helpful? Most of us still have some questions after reviewing them.

I'm here to help with issues and questions about how WikiTree works. Click my name to send me a private message or ask in the comment section of my page.

Travis,

Thank you for volunteering. You are now a full member of the WikiTree family. Your contributions and family will add another branch to the big tree.

I suggest starting with the New Member How-To pages, they will save you a lot of time and frustration.

I am here to help answer your questions you have. Add as much information as you can, it all helps to turn a “name” back into a person.

Happy tree climbing
