Biography

Overin McCrea was born on the 22nd April 1855, the only son (and 4th child) of James and Elizabeth Jennings McCrea née Taylor. [1]

He was Christened on the 12th June 1855 in the Parish of St Andrew Scots Church, Sydney, New South Wales.[2]

Overin McCrea died young.

Overin McCrea passed away on the 9th August 1855, aged 13 weeks*. (The NSW BDM has his death registered as Mc Crae, rather than McCrea, first name Oberon, not Overin.)[3]

Overin dates

He was buried in the Presbyterian section of the Devonshire Street Cemetery, New South Wales, on or after the 9th August 1855. The cemetery records appear to show his name as Oberon (as with the BDM registration); and his birth as being on the 10th May 1855,[4] but the church registry for Christening clearly states the 22nd April. [5]
Update 20190517: Australian Cemeteries Index has updated the name to Overin, instead of Oberon, and also updated the birth date.

* 13 weeks is only correct if the cemetery record is accurate and the church registry inaccurate. That's a difference of 2 weeks and 4 days.

Overin name

Name
Since we first discovered this child was born (Mother originally thought her great-grandmother was an only child), my mother and I debated frequently on what the first name actually was. She favoured a name starting with "C", because she claimed it more closely resembled a C than an O. I theorised Corin, Colin, Cowen, Cowin, but never truly believed it was a C name.
I did a comparison with other names written by the same hand and can only see it as an O, but exactly what I have no idea. Mel P 03:54, 30 December 2018 (UTC)
