Frederick William Henry was born on 21 September 1910 and baptised in Grimsby on 12 October 1910 the son of George Thomas Port and Florence Patty Croft. [1].

By the time of the 1921 census the family had had moved to 37 Harold Street where Fredericks father George was employed as a carpenter by C.J. Wills & Sons Ltd of London , public works contractors of Waltham Grimsby. In the same year that company won the contract to build the houses of the Becontree Estate in the Dagenham area of Essex. At the time of its completion in the early 1930s this was the largest social housing scheme in the world.

By the mid 1920s, the family are thought to have moved to London probably in the area of Forest Gate or Upton in East London. In 1926 his family moved to the Becontree housing estate in Dagenham, Essex and were the first tenants of 2, Margery Road, Dagenham.
Frederick married Mabel I S. Giles was registered in the September quarter of 1934 in the Romford registration district.[2]
In the 1939 register Frederick (age 29), Plumber's Mate London County Council, was recorded as married at 1 Fossway, Barking And Dagenham, Dagenham M.B., Essex, England.[3]
