Biography

Heather Stevens is a member of the Australia Project.
Heather Stevens is a member of the Australian Convicts Team.

I like the collaborative nature of Wikitree and have enjoyed adding my family trees, searching for resources, and building biographies.

I always try as much as possible to use primary sources. For example, pre-1856 NSW births, deaths and marriages can be looked at easily and quickly in public libraries - it's a shame that many researchers do not do this.

One of my current projects is the profile of the bushranger Jack Donohoe (abt.1806-1830). My interest in him stems from my ancestors Mary O'Hara and her grandmother Mary O'Brien who were transported to Moreton Bay thanks to him!

I am also working on the biography of Francis MacNamara (abt.1811-1861), who was known as "Frank the Poet".

I have contributed to the profiles of Charlotte Badger, the so-called "woman pirate", and Billy Blue known as the "Old Commodore", a "well-known character about Sydney".

I would like to work on First Fleet profiles when I get the time! I also take photos for Findagrave and Monument Australia. Some profiles:

Dear Heather Stevens,

You suppose that John Felix Bunney was the same person as Jan Felix Bezemer, born in the Netherlands. I know it's true. But how did you find out? And do you know more about the period he lived in South Africa at the end of the 19th century? Kind regards,

Thom Bezemer

Hi Thom

Thanks for your message about John Felix Bunney (1872-1942). It's great to hear from you.

Nearly all of John's profile was written by Mark Rogers in 2019. You can see the changes that Mark made from the "Changes" tab in his profile.

I moved the bit about Jan Felix Bezemer, born in the Netherlands into Research Notes, as I felt it needed confirmatory evidence. So you are welcome to add what you know about him and make changes to his profile. You may like to adopt his profile.

Thanks again from Heather

Hi Heather,

We're contacting you for the annual Australia Project membership checkin. We really appreciate your involvement in the Project in the last year. Thank you so much for all your help to improve Australian profiles on WikiTree.

Please could you reply to this message, or send me a private message to let us know if you'd like to stay on in the Project, and if you'd like to make any changes to the teams that you belong to. The teams are listed on Australia Project Teams.

If you've moved on to other things for the moment, that's absolutely fine. We'd appreciate if you'd let us know so that we can remove you from the membership list.

Over the past year, Australia Project members have been more active on Discord. We're finding it a fun way to communicate as a project. If you're not on Discord yet, here's some information - Help:Discord. If you are already on the WikiTree Discord server, let us know, and we can send you an invite link to the dedicated Australia Project server (WikiAustralia) where all our chat channels are located. It's a great way to communicate with other members on your project team/s, or for any general questions.

We're always happy to receive any ideas or suggestions that you have to make our project even better.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

The Australia Project Leadership Team ~ Gillian, Margaret and Veronica

Thanks Margaret,

I will be staying in the Australian Project and Convicts team.

Hello Heather,

It's time for the annual Australia Project membership checkin. Thank you so much for contributing to the project and Australian profiles on WikiTree during the last year. We really appreciate you!

If you would like to stay in the project, please reply to this message or send me a private message to let us know that you would like to stay on. Alternatively, if your WikiTree and research interests have moved away from Australia, please let us know and we can remove you from the membership list for the moment. You will, of course, be very welcome to rejoin the project down the track whenever you want to.

We are also keen to know if you want to make any changes to the team or teams that you want to focus on. Take a look on Australia Project Teams to see what teams there are to choose from. If you want to discuss this, or have any questions or suggestions about the Australia Project we'd love to hear your ideas.

Thanks so much for being part of the Toddlin' Tortoises Team for the October 2022 Source-a-Thon. Every source or citation verifying the information on a profile, helps make for a healthier Tree!
Hertyl and Spertyl Slowsky Tortoises face each other, with a large gold winner's trophy between them. Beneath the adult Tortoises are the baby Slowsky twins, Liddyll, and Iddyll, holding the words "Wonderful WikiTreer" between them, and behind the phrase, superimposed upon the trophy, is the WikiTree DNA globe icon. Beneath the entire tableau is the phrase "We're all winners in the end".

Heather: Hello. I note your activity on the Faunce-170 profile last November and wonder if you may be able to assist with another 'Faunce family' member? I have been researching this family for some time now, but have only recently found an orphaned WikiTree profile (Faunce-176) for an apparent brother - one "Martin Faunce".

In your Faunce-170 research have you come across any easily accessible 'sourced to original records' details for Martin? Any/all help would be greatly appreciated. My thanks in advance if you are able to help. Regards.....Phil (Grace-883).

Thanks Heather, for adding the father of Mary Veronica Austin. You have confirmed that she is not a relative. We are descended from the Austins of Baltonsborough, Somerset, but I could not locate Mary Veronica. Her grand-daughter, Veronica ('Tim') married my cousin Harold Macgregor ('Gregor') Gillespie, which is how she came to be attached to my family. Cheers, Richard [email address removed]

Heather, thanks so much for being part of the Toddlin' Tortoises Team for the July 2022 Connect-a-Thon. Every well-constructed profile added helps to grow a healthier Tree!

Two tortoises, Hertyl and Spertyl, dressed in their spiffy Connect-a-Thon Tuxedo coats, the one on the left holding a top hat in "hand", and the one on the right with a glass of champagne. Between them is a multi-carriage wood or coal burning steam train, near the wheels of which are the words "slow train". Above the train is the WikiTree DNA tree logo, across which are the words "Wonderful WikiTreer". Floating above the logo are the words "Toddlin' Tortoises", and at the bottom of the image is the phrase "We're all winners in the end" — because we are. All winners.
Hertyl and Spertyl just want to say: "What a Wonderful WikiTreer you are".

Hi Heather, Just wanted to thank you for the fantastic bio you added to John Colley. You have brought this man to 'life', which I love, not just dates etc. I also appreciate the sources added and that you haven't used unsourced info from other ancestry sites (which I hate and mostly remove again!). I also appreciate that you contacted me via Wikitree to let me know what you were doing! Terrific Work! Kind Regards, Denise.

Hi Heather,

I have recently joined Wikitree in search of family history. I am now interested in 3rd fleet arrivals and the Morgan family of Denbigh / Cobbitty. I would like to connect with you and learn more about the family. In particular the Ann (nee Collins) Morgan and her daughter Sarah Cantrill - Meyers who travelled to Ipswich. The living conditions and how they travelled such distances is intriguing. I want to make the connection between their resillience and life in harsh conditions. I look forward to hearing from you. Kind regards, Julie

Hi Heather. I’m interested in Thomas Hammond, born 1792 in Gawsworth, Cheshire, England, who worked in a solicitors in 1820 and was transported to Australia. I have heard he was parolled after two years, bought some land in Botany and one of his descendants still lives there. I descended from his mother’s oldest brother, George Wardle 1738, so anything found would be great!
