Harold Leslie White was born in 1905 in Numurkah, Victoria, Australia.[1] He was the son of James White and Beatrice Elizabeth Hodge.
He married Elizabeth Ogilvie Wilson at Queen’s College, Carlton, Victoria, on the 18th of October 1930.[2][3] They had four children: David, Judith, John, and Katharine.
He was the Australian Parliamentary Librarian from 1947, and also as the first National Librarian oversaw the creation of the National Library of Australia.[4][3]
He died in Canberra, ACT, on 31 August 1992.[3]
Harold White was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1962,[5] and was knighted in 1970.[6] He was also a recipient of the Australian Library and Information Association's H.C.L. Anderson award in 1983 for outstanding service to librarianship.[3] The National Library renamed the Harold White Research Fellowship in his honour in 1985.[7]
