Jan was born about 1180. He is the son of Jan III van Heusden and Aleidis Cuijk.
In a 1200 charter of the convent of Berne, Jan van Heusden proclaims (oorkondt) that he, with permission of his sons lord Arnoldus and Johannes, in honor of him, his wife Aleydis and his (passed on) parents Arnoldus and Justina and his predecessors, gift to the convent of Berna, the privileage to sail or travel toll-free through his territory. To be able to buy and sell and to be free of any tax demands (rechtsvorderingen) and that he offers this privileage at the convent on the Maria-Altar.[1][2]
