Biography

Marie, daughter of Jean Mouflet and Anne Dodin, was born 3 March 1683 and baptized the same day in Montréal (Sts-Anges-de-Lachine). Her godparents were Mathias CHATOUTEAU and Marie PERREIN. [1]

On 25 Oct 1700 in Montréal (Notre-Dame), at 17 years old, she married François Meloche, 24 years old, of Notre-Dame-de-Cougnes, La Rochelle diocese, France, son of François Meloche and Marie Bloquin. Were present: Yves Pinet, Pierre Ardouin, Michel Gourdon and Pierre Chantereau. [2] They had the following children:

  1. Pierre, b. 1701 - m. 1729, Jeanne Caron
  2. Jean Baptiste or Joseph, b. 1704 - m. 1743, Marguerite Picard
  3. Marie Josèphe, b. 1706 - m. 1725, François Cardinal
  4. François (sic), b. ? - m. 1751, Marie Josèphe Brunet
  5. Marie Anne (sic), b. ? - m. 1764, Alexis Bigras
  6. Marie Anne, b. 1710 - m. 1732, Jean Guitar - m. 1756, Jean Baptiste Renaud
  7. François, b. 1717 - m. 1747, Barbe Jérôme
  8. Dominique, b. 1719 - m. 1765, Thérèse campeau
  9. Antoine, b. 1721 - m. 1751, Marguerite Martel - m. 1757, Marie Anne Laniel
  10. Simon, b. 1724 - m. 1750, Françoise Sarrazin - m. 1759, Marie Parent
  11. Jacques, b. 1726 - d. 1746 (Source: IGD)

She passed away between 17 Jan 1757 (still alive when her son Antoine married Marie Anne Laniel) and 20 Feb 1759 (said "deceased" at her son Pierre Simon's Marriage). The family was residing in Lachine at the time.

Research Notes

In the Register of Sts-Anges de Lachine, there are two Burial Records at two different dates for the same person.. Suzanne Mouflet, Marie's sister. This Suzanne married Vincent Henry Laforge in 1710. She would have died 20 Sep 1756. [3] Suzanne can't have been buried two times... The other record, 29 Sep 1757, is probably for Marie, since she was alive in Jan 1757 and died before Feb 1759. [4]

can i add something about a story that i found or heard Marie Mouflet – How did she survive? Why did she return?

Anne’s sister, Marie, also escaped death in the Lachine massacre as did another sister, Marie-Suzette. Their story of survival, however, remains a mystery. Were they, too, taken captive by the Iroquois and released a year later like their sister Anne? Or was Marie spared in another way?
