Biography
Member of US Southern Colonies' Team.
Jim Ward is the descendant of Palatine migrants.
Jim Ward reached the Blue Skies milestone by sourcing 50 profiles in the Feb 2023 Sourcerers Project Sourcing Challenge.
I am married with one daughter. I worked as an engineer (EE and Systems) and retired in 2017 after >39 years at one company (which changed names a few times). I resisted doing genealogy work until after I retired due to the addictive nature of time spent on genealogy.
Genealogy Tools
Besides Wikitree, I currently have genealogy accounts on Ancestry, familysearch (morman), FTDNA, GEDmatch (not used much), LivingDNA (not used much), short subscription to findmypast (which I'll use again), Genie, my daughter's 23&me, and more. I previously did most of my tree editing and referencing using ancestry as I was more familiar with its tools, but now I about equally use wikitree to improve both trees.
I received my FTDNA y111 matches in spring 22 to finalize my search for my gg grandfather's father. I have received (30 June) full sequence mtDNA test results. I am exploring matches in an attempt to find the mother of my gg grandmother.
I previously let my Myheritage account lapse for several reasons. Their 'record matches' usually have no sources or documents, just unsourced trees that are copies of unsourced trees, ad infinitum, with zero sources or documents in the entire string. Also, most of my DNA matches have either no or minimal trees. It does have some good points: chromosome mapping tools, DNA clusters, tree consistency checker, standalone tree app that can create separate branches, and others. I renewed Myheritage during christmas 2023 sale.
17 July 22: I subscribed to genie pro with a deal for myheritage data. I had been waiting for a combo offer, since myheritage 'owns' genie.
Even with pro access, Genie has a horrible function. I located my gg grandfather's father using FTDNA Y chromosome matching. However, Genie will not allow a connection without creating a duplicate profile to be merged later, and they wonder why genie has so many duplicate profiles!
In keeping with common wikitree practice, I haven't added or updated living relatives since my initial gedcom imports. My ancestry tree and its copy on myheritage do have living relatives.
I have public DNA info in multiple databases including ancestry, myheritage, gedmatch, ftdna, livingdna, and more. My daughter is in 23&me.
Frequently used wikitree tools include reports from datadoctor (for both profiles I manage and relatives) and biocheck.
Project 1776
Part of my ancestry I am very proud of is my family's service in the Revolutionary war. I performed a search of my direct ancestors with criteria of: male, born ~1730-1760, and lived in America in 1775. This produced 24/21 profiles (3 were in two branches). Of these 21 ancestors, 18 have evidence of service in the Revolutionary war with 1776 stickers added, two are still being researched for better evidence, 1 has no evidence, and there were zero Tories! Note: these stats need to be updated.

I prefer stickers to project boxes. My personal sticker criteria for adding to my ancestors is one per branch (earliest), usually born in America and died before 1776.

I have connected the majority of my tree to the Wiki tree and am waiting on 1 requested merge caused by the merge of a spouse. I haven't had many duplicates (3?) requiring merges.
One ancester I suspected could have issues with parents still does (Hill-720). I was just about to see how to flag him as a research interest when I saw your 3 day old comment on my public profile which I don't look at as much as my nav home page.

Here are a couple of issues I had with getting pre-1700 certified. The requirements said one had to coordinate with a project. I sent answers to 2 asking to join, but the Southern Colonies have a 30 day rather than 7 day waiting periodfor pre-1700 and the United states project appeared to have a long delay in replying to answers to join. I did not look at its waiting time period. As I said in my edit to an answer, I guess answering rather than joining counts as coordinating, but the pre-1700 requirements could be clearer. The 2nd issue is that after successfully passing the test and checking the box, I never got the submit button. I asked a question and discovered that the same issue had been occurring for several years. I took it again and got the submit button. I tried to add this info to my question (as other's 2nd tries hadn't worked in the past) but I couldn't locate my question thread.
One of our mentors created a tutorial for the GEDCOMpare process that I found very helpful. I hope that you will too.

I just loaded GEDmatch ID links to two DNA tests. Is other info asked from specific companies redundant?
Also, I did a nonstandard DNA thing by using a tool to merge 2 DNA test (ancestry and living DNA)s. Gedmatch recognized this data, but maybe no one else. Is that worth adding that GEDmatch ID?
I plan on loading my latest ancestry.com .ged file. Kit isn’t immediately obvious where the upload is, but probably not hard to find.
At WikiTree we do not analyze or store your RAW DNA. We help DNA cousins find each other. We do that by letting you identify which tests you have taken and whether you have uploaded your test to the GEDMatch.com website.
When you add your DNA test information, it takes about 24 hours for the system to add your profile link to the profiles of your ancestors and their descendants. That is why there need to be profiles for your ancestors. There is more information about that in the Getting Started with DNA FAQ.
You are welcome to use our profile database and G2G Forum for genealogical research. When you are ready add or edit profiles, please visit your Tags and Comments page to add some information. We use the tags and comments to help you connect with other genealogists. Examples are in the right column on my profile.
After you have made your changes, scroll down and click the "Save Tag(s) and Volunteer" link in the big green box. A Greeter will be alerted and get you confirmed. Don't worry, you would only be volunteering to abide by our community guidelines and add profiles for your family. As you start adding profiles, please make sure to review any suggested matches because there are lots of profiles already here. You may be able to make a fast connection to the Global WikiTree.
