Hello John,

I hope you are well.

I'm sorry that you are no longer participating in the England Project's Orphan Trail, which we ask all new project members to complete. Sometimes people find that their interests change or the Orphan Trail isn't what they thought it would be. Thank you for your work on the Orphan Trail!

You are welcome to re-apply to join the England Project when you have the time to commit to completing the Orphan Trail.

I do hope you choose to rejoin us in the future. In the meantime, please feel free to use the Orphan Trail resource pages as a guide when creating or editing English profiles. You can find links to them here: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:England_Orphaned_Profiles_Team

As the England Project Leaders, we are completing our six monthly check-in with all project members.

Are you happy to stay in your current project teams? Which teams are you most active in? Are there other teams you would like to join or become more active in?

Also, do you have any feedback on what the project is doing well and anything we could do better in the future?

Please respond to this message by posting a reply below or sending me a private message. I look forward to hearing from you.

Hey grandpa,

Just wondering if we have either the surname Kruger or Bohnenstengel in our tree from the Seelow, Kr. Griefenhagen, Stettin Pomerania area? It's now part of Poland called Zelewo, Gryfino, Szczecin, Poland.

WikiTree has many Krugers and 1 Bohnenstengel which you can enter into search. If help is needed........which side of family and more details.......would be helpful. Grampa Jack

Hi,

The best tree right now to verify on the Polish and Russian size is the one below. She currently has documents from Russia that she is having a translator work through. If your DNA results are on ancestry(if not I can give you access to mine) and you can use the other family members and search for those last names in the trees of others to see if there are any matching DNA's with them. There may not be a lot from Poland, as the EU has some restrictions around this at this time due to privacy and exposure of the living.

The tree below is by Rita Wagner, and I will say her work is meticulous, the Polish side has not been one that I've been ready to explore yet due to the huge learning curve. But one my closest friend is from there, so if there are documents that need to be translated I can get that done. I'm hoping over the next few years to do the research and dive down that rabbit hole as I expect to travel to there in 2021 or 2022 once restricts lift as it is one of the next 3 countries on the list. These are your best names to work with at this time. I'd also suggest looking at DNA matches for people located in Poland then look at their ancestors to see if there seem to be some that repeat themselves as that is usually a sign of hitting upon things. If you can find enough from different lines, the possibility to do what is called triangulation on the DNA to prove the paper trail.

https://www.ancestry.ca/family-tree/tree/2256737/family/pedigree?cfpid=1840696861

Now keep in mind it is a working tree, so not all info is necessarily guaranteed to be accurate and before any profiles can be added to wikitree we need to ensure they are sourced, but the profiles are open so you can work on them once you have documents.

There is also the option of creating a Lazarus DNA profile on gedmatch, if the eldest family member M would be willing to do a dna test through ancestry, we can upload those results to gedmatch, Then if immediate kids also do the same (I think you can might be able to get up to 4, L is definitely not an option) can be combined, then remove M's and you will have a strong profile DNA with Harry's to look for more matches that will link to the Russian and Polish Sides.

Rita and i have also agreed to split costs on YDNA test when they have a sale for her partner, which will allow confirmation of the Russian side and other descendants and additional proof.

I got an email from a cousin named Beth, saying:

Hello cousin!

I'm attempting to solve the mystery of the identity of my 97 year old great-aunt Betty's great-grandfather. Her grandfather, Wilhelm Freiderich Carl Kruger, was illegitimate and no father is listed. He was born in 1846 in Seelow, Kr. Griefenhagen, Stettin Pomerania, which is now part of Poland called Zelewo, Gryfino, Szczecin, Poland. Records were lost in WWII save for a few Ahnenpass documents a cousin from behind the Iron Curtain posted to his tree on Ancestry. This (along with other documents) verified that his mother's name was Regina Kruger and she was also born in Seelow in 1824. Her parents are listed on said documents as Christian and Sofia Kruger (not sure if they had the same last name or if that was also her maiden name or the person filling out the form just neglected her maiden name).

A DNA match from Germany who is descended from her and the man she married after Wilhelm's birth confirmed this DNA link. This husband's name was Freidrich Bohnenstengel. They had more children together as well. You also match this German DNA match, he is listed as Thomas Boigenreif kit number WY2320572 on gedmatch. My great-aunt's kit is UW7150129. They both match your kit XS7995192.

My question for you, if you've gone back far enough in your research, is if you have either the surname Kruger or Bohnenstengel in your tree from this area. If its Bohnenstengel, then Wilhelm's father is also Thomas' ancestor and we are full cousins and the mystery is solved. If you have Kruger well its more confirmation at least that line is correct. If you have neither, then perhaps we are getting somewhere with the identity of the mysterious father if you have other surname links to that area of Pomerania.

MacKenzie,

You may want to see if M will do a MTDNA test through Family Tree DNA, our MTDNA line is a unique one with no exact matches known as

H3b-G16129A!

Our closest matches under the same haplogroup have over 100 exact matches, meaning at least the line that L has changed(and possibly K & S as well), meaning that you likely also have unique MTDNA. It is not know who the change exactly happened in, but likely somewhere between Cornelia to L/K/S.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Kris_Wheeler_-_MTDNA_H3b-G16129A%21_Matches

I am doing a project and reverse engineering the trees for all the 1 matches in a hope to find the confirmed genetic lines

Glad to help. Have you added any documentation to, say, your great-grandparents’ profiles?

Look at my great-grandfather’s profile, https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Alvis-18. I have more documentation than might be needed, but this was uploaded years ago from my Reunion file. The key parts are those which give birth, marriage, death, and connection to parents. Other facts are the censuses which support those and points of interest, such as the fact that although he was not of German descent, his wife’s family was, and therefore he was a victim of discrimination during World War II.

Are you tracing all the members of your family, such as aunts, uncles, cousins, or just the direct line? Obviously, this takes time, but genealogy is not something to be hurried. Kathy

Kathy, All......also, I descend from all the Surety Barons, incl. King John, and my wife is my cousin, just for a kickstart. We have over 3 boxes of documents and photos to learn how to enter........meanwhile entering closer "missing"relatives.......I joined WT to complete the gaps in some lines. Thankyou for your interest. Jack

There is a query in any case regarding the daughter who was married to Oliphant. However the merging of these two identical men should not displace anyone on either of their profiles. I am working very hard to correct the countless errors on all these pages. Some are just sloppiness other just howling errors.

posted by John Thompson
There is no mention of the Borthwick-Oliphant connexion in either Nisbet or Macfarlane's Collections (in the latter is the "Genealogy of the Oliphants").

As this is pre-1400 the chances of confirming it are scant if the main authorities don't record it. I shall keep looking.

I proceeded and unblocked the merge. I am on the Graham line and do not need to be overly concerned with this Oliphant ancestor.
posted by John Thompson
I have established that the Borthwick/Oliphant girl cannot be a daughter of the 1st Lord Borthwick's father as the chronology is impossible. I have therefore reassigned her to the earlier Sir William Borthwick of that Ilk. That probably makes little difference to your concerns.

Hi John

Thank you for the query

If you are placing Military titles into the suffix field then the accepted abbreviations are fine just do not add ., as they are not

Use the full military title in the biography so as to differentiate the use in different countries

One of the main problems is with locations such as MI first thing I think of is Myocardial Infarction! ( Retired Nurse) or Mile (being English) Mi relates to a musical instrument in China.

Hi John

Thank you for adding your DNA Test to your profile on WikiTree. Getting Started with DNA will tell you more about how DNA kits are used on WikiTree.

DNA at WikiTree provides a visual way for you to find others who have tested and have the potential of having common ancestors. It normally takes 24 hours from adding a test, or adding a new ancestor, or ancestor’s descendant, for WikiTree to display your name and test results on your ancestors and their descendants’ profiles for potential cousins to compare results with.

Have fun!
