Biography

Janet was born about 1709. (A source is needed for this date.) [1][2]

Hugh and Janet Moore arrived in New Hampshire with other Scots-Irish immigrants in 1731.[3] They took up residence in Londonderry, NH.

They had nine children who were listed in Hugh's Last Will and Testament; Eliza, Robert, Mary, Janet, Ellse, Margaret, William, Daniel and Hugh. The will also shows that they were wealthy (£6036.10). The will, written in 1753, talks about "when the children come of age". This milestone is later revealed to be 15 for girls and 14 for boys. "Eliz.a" may be the one exception because it refers to her inheriting when her brother Robert comes of age rather than herself. One of the witnesses to the will was Robert Morrison, who may have been a relative rather than a clerk because he signed with a small "m". Hugh died in 1758.

In May 1760, Janet sailed with most of her children to Nova Scotia to found the town of Truro on the Charming Molly with other New England Planters.[4] The passenger list spelled Ellse as Alice. Hugh Jr. was accompanied by his wife Janet (Logan) Moore and William by his wife Susanna (Long) Moore. Daniel and Margaret appeared to be still unmarried. There was an additional sister, Esther, was likely born after the will was written in 1753.[5] Thomas Miller's's book claims that Daniel was only 6 when they sailed and that their sister Janet sailed with her husband William Logan. The Truro Township Grant map clearly shows allotments for Hugh Miller, William Logan and Widow Logan.[6]

Janet (Morrison) Moore's death is unknown but she may have been buried in the Truro cemetery on Robie Street.

  2. She was married by 1731. If she was born in 1709, she was 44 when Daniel was born in 1753. She is not likely to have been born before 1709 but may have been born between 1710-1713, or later if she was married younger than 18.
  3. U.S. and Canada, The birthplace is not stated but as they were listed as Scots-Irish, they were probably from Northern Ireland.
  4. Robert, Mary and Eliza (if she is not later called Esther) appear to have stayed in New Hampshire.

  6. Grants, Grantees of Truro Township, Widow Logan may have been Hugh's mother-in-law as his wife Janet was listed by Smith as the daughter of a widow named Janet Logan. The widow may also have been William Logan's mother.
