I was born in Schiedam in the Netherlands but grew up trilingually in South Africa. (Pretoria, Port Elizabeth, Pietersburg and Johannesburg). My roots lie on the island of Texel dating back to the 1600's. My ancestors from Texel mainly lived in the village of Oudeschild where the ships of the VOC were anchored at sea before leaving for the Cape. One of my ancestors from Texel is the VOC surgeon Caspar Ziervogel who was born in Sweden. Through him I am related to the Ziervogel family in South Africa, Germany and Sweden. Like many Dutch people I have extensive German roots.
