George Battely was named in the will of his father, Edmund, dated 1565, under which he inherited the close called Warpullocks in South Elmham St Michael.[1]
The property Warpullocks was later in the possession of the "Rumburgh Town Feoffees", the parish charity, and rented out with the proceeds used to pay for the upkeep of the church and for poor relief. It's not known when or how the property came into the hands of the charity, but it was before 1686, when the Feoffees were recorded entering into a lease.[2][3]
His uncle, William Battelley, senior, of Saint Nicholas in South Elmham, yeoman, left Elizabeth Battely his goddaughter and daughter of "his nephew George" £5 in his will dated 1621. Each of "the rest" of George's children were left 20s. George Battely "of [South Elmham] St Nicholas" was named one of two executors.[4]
