Biography

Marritie was baptized on 15 October 1679 in the Reformed Dutch Church of New York, recorded as the child of Jan Janszen Langestraten and Marritje Arents. Witnesses were Dirck Sicken and Jannetie Dije.[1]

She is recorded with three marriages.[2] Her first marriage was to Pieter Simkam, son of Pieter Simkam, a tailor. Their banns, published 24 November 1699 in the Reformed Dutch Church of New York, call them Pieter Sunkam, j. m. from New York, and Marijke Rommeus, j. d., also from New York, both living in New York. The record indicates that they were married by Domine Gualtherus Dubois, but the marriage date is not recorded. [3]

Her second marriage was on 28 October 1705, in the New York Reformed Dutch Church, to Burger Davidsz Van Grummen. They registered banns on 15 October, recorded as Burger Davidsz Van Grummen, j. m. Van N. York, and Marrijtje Janssze Romme, Wed. Pieter Simkam Van N. York.[4] Her third marriage was in the New York Reformed Dutch Church on 14 January 1721, with a license issued the previous day, to Richard Philpot; in the record she is called "Maria Burger."[5] Richard Philpot died before 5 August 1733, when she was a sponsor at the baptism of her grandson, William Elsworth, and was recorded as “Maritje Rome, Wed. Van R. Filpot”[6]

She died 23 October 1759.[7] She had made her will on 30 May 1751, calling herself "Mary Philpot, of New York, widow." The will mentions two daughters: "Deborah, wife of Matthew Du Bois, of Duchess County, ,and Mary, wife of William Ellsworth, of New York, gunsmith." It was proved on 5 January 1770.[8]
