Army records say he was born in Soho, London, as does the 1911 census entry, in his own handwriting
12 Feb 1858 he enlisted in 1 / 20 Regiment of Foot. Copy of his Army records is available, they show he served around the Empire, with a lot in India but nothing outstanding 19 Feb 1877 He was discharged with heart problems from Royal Victoria Hospital at Netley, Hampshire and became a Cheslea Pensioner living with his family 27 October 1879 married Mary Ann Gregory in All Saints Church. Newington, Surrey, Mary Ann made her mark. On 1911 census Mary Ann is incorrectly transcribed as "Muzan"
