Don Nicola Calderaro, called Coletta, was born at Lipari, Provincia di Messina, Kingdom of Sicily, about 1555, son of Giovanni Battista Calderaro and Caterina LoScavo; and died at Lipari, after 1 May 1611.[1]
He married, first, at Lipari, about 1579, Costanza Carnilivari, who was born at Lipari, about 1559, son of Mariano Carnilivari and Margarita Falanga; and died at Lipari, before 18 March 1581.[2]
He married, second, at Lipari, about 1581, Donna Francesca Cavaleri, who was born at Lipari, about 1559, daughter of Giovanello Caverleri and Lucretia / Tutia Messina; and died at Lipari, after 11 November 1594.[3]
He may have been the Coletta Calderaro who married, third, at Lipari, 27 December 1597, in the casa of the Reverendo Diacono suo fratello by Reverendo Don Giovanni de Vita, Caterinella Amendola. The witnesses were Nello Bonfiglio, Alonso Oratdo, and Bartolomeo Amendola.[4]
Don Nicola Calderaro was a sergeant in the army of Lipari, guarding the garrison (walls) of the città of Lipari.
On 25 October 1597, Cola Calderaro, in the state of a hostile inland takeover by the Turks, petitioned the court that the destinies and legacies of Joanello Galtero and Filippo Tabiano were worth the ransom of the poor captives.[5]
In the 1610 Census of Lipari, Coletta Calderaro, aged about 55, was enumerated with his sister (Beatrice), one niece (Maria Munforti—daughter of Beatrice), and one servant (Ottavio Pongu, 18). Nicola’s taxable property included one building valued at onze 160, seven parcels of land valued at onze 425, one slave (Maria) valued at onze 40, one ox valued at onze 8, 150 goats valued at onze 30, and objects of silver and gold valued at onze [?]. His assets (income stamped at onze 24 per year, income derived from perpetual leaseholding valued at onze 2 per year) totaled onze 300. His assets due to him and without specific security totaled onze 30. His debts (income derived from perpetual leaseholding totaled onze 1.4 per year) totaled onze 34. His debts without specific security totaled onze 170. The aforementioned 150 goats were obliged in the rent of Marco Antonio LoRé.[6]
