Joseph Worrell Birchall was born in 1828 in Sutton, Lancashire, England, the son of Joseph Birchall and Ann Topping.^[1]

He was baptised on 18 May 1828 at St Helens Chapel of Ease in the parish of Prescot, Lancashire. His father was a bargeman. ^[2]

In 1841 Joseph was living in Prescot, Lancashire. ^[3]

In 1851 Joseph was living in Sutton, Lancashire. ^[1]

He married Mary Martindale on 29 December 1851 at the church of St Mary the Virgin in Prescot, Lancashire. Neither had been married before. Joseph was a 23-year-old collier living in Sutton, Mary was 18 and lived in Eccleston. Their fathers were named as Joseph Birchall (flatman) and James Martendale (brickmaker). The witnesses were Ralph Martendale and Ann Martendale.^[4][5]

On 17 Apr 1854, Joseph was one of the witnesses at the marriage of Mary's brother Samuel to Ann Done at St Helens Parish Church.

In 1881 Joseph was living with his wife and 4 children at 79 Peasley Cross Lane, Sutton, Lancashire. He was a gas fitter. ^[6]
