James Martindale was born in about 1797 in Sutton, Lancashire, England.[1]
When James was about 25 he married Margaret Dixon on 2 December 1822 at the church of St Mary the Virgin in Prescot, Lancashire. Neither had been married before; James was a brick maker of Sutton in the local parish, Margaret a spinster of Windle in the local parish. The witnesses were William Martindale and Margaret Anderton.[2] [3] [4] The couple had at least 6 children.
Their son William was born in about 1827 in Sutton, Lancashire.
Their son Samuel was born in about 1829 in Sutton, Lancashire.
Their son Ralph was born in about 1833 in Sutton, Lancashire.
Their daughter Mary was born in about 1835 in Sutton, Lancashire.
Their daughter Ann was born in about 1837 in Eccleston, Lancashire.
Their son James was born in about 1839 in Eccleston, Lancashire.
By June 6th 1841, they were living in West O Row, Eccleston. James was a labourer, as was their son William. As well as James and Margaret and their children, the household included three labourers who were probably boarders or lodgers - Ralph Woods (aged 30-34), Henry Martindale (in his 20s - perhaps a brother or nephew of James?) and John Forster (aged 28). [5]
In 1851 the family was living in the High Street in Eccleston, Lancashire. James was a brick maker; as well as the immediate family, the household included eight lodgers.[1]
By April 7th 1861, Margaret was visiting Ann Colquit (probably their daughter Ann) in Hammond Street, Bolton, along with her (inferred) grandson Ralph.[6] According to the FamilySearch tree, James was alive and can be found in the census at piece 2616 folio 31 page 4, but I haven't verified this.
Margaret died in 1863 in Prescot district, aged 61.
By April 2nd 1871, James was widowed and living with his son Ralph in Long Row, Sutton. His grandson Ralph was also in the household. James is listed as the father-in-law of his son Ralph - perhaps the census responses were given by Ralph's wife. [7]
There is some uncertainty that this is the correct marriage - the FamilySearch tree for them has James marrying Margaret Nicholson on 22 Oct 1822 at St James' Church in Liverpool.[8] It wasn't at all unusual for couples from the parish of Prescot to marry in Liverpool, so it is a plausible alternative.
The James who married Margaret Dixon was a brickmaker, which matches the occupation of James Martindale in 1851; but no occupation is specified for the one who married Margaret Nicholson. No birth registrations of children of either couple were found during the first few years after civil registration began. A Martindale-Dixon couple registering children's births in Ulverstone district were still in that area in 1841, and the parents weren't named James and Margaret.
No birth registration was found for James - the James Martindale registered in 1838 with mother's maiden name Bickerstaff was the son of James Martindale (brickmaker) and Sarah Bickerstaff, who married in Farnworth Chapel on 10 Nov 1828. That James was still married to Sarah in 1841, and their son James was with them. Their twins John and Samuel were registered in 1841 with mother's maiden name Bickerstaff, and are also with them in 1841.
There are a lot of children in the FamilySearch tree who probably don't belong to this couple, also christenings that have been attached to some of the children who are theirs that almost certainly belong to children with similar names and birth years in other families. It's very likely this family was Catholic and that's why no baptisms have been found for the children.
