Biography

William Couper Fyfe was born March 31, 1880, a son to William McKay Fyfe and Mary Weir Fleming in Edinburgh, Scotland.

He married Sarah Hamilton (daughter of James Hamilton and Margaret Weir Fleming) on April 7, 1904 in New Monkland, Lanarkshire, Scotland.

They emigrated to Canada and lived in Birtle, Manitoba. They had two children: Marguerita Evelyn Fyfe (1905 - 1969) and Beverly Couper Fyfe (1909 - 1995).

On April 6, 1916, he signed Canadian WW1 CEF Attestation Papers in Saskatoon. He went overseas as Sargeant under Regimental # 204675 with the 214th Battalion, as a bandmaster.

On July 24, 1935, William, a widower, married Lilla Bell Isbister, a spinster, at the United Church of Canada, 1260 Fort St in Victoria, British Columbia.

William died at the age of 60 in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada on May 26, 1940.

OBITUARY: LATE W.C. FYFE: Saskatoon for 17 years with the exception of several years spent overseas as bandmaster of the 214th Battalion, during the first Great War. Coming to Victoria in 1926, Mr. Fyfe took an active interest in choral work, conducting the First United Church choir for 12 years and the Arion Club for the last four years. He was also well known in lawn bowling circles, playing in many tournaments for the C.P.R. team. Surviving are his widow, at the family residence, 1330 Mitchel Street; one daughter, Mrs. William O'Shaughnessy, and one son, Beverly, both of Nanaimo.
