I'm from the Netherlands, born and still living in Twente [1][2], close to the German border, in this and some surrounding area's a lot of people still speak 'Twents', a dialect also called 'Nedersaksisch' (Low Saxon)[3][4][5], so most people born in this area, if they were raised by parents still speaking this dialect, can easily communicate with each other, whether they are from Germany or from the Netherlands. It's also very handy for reading and understanding the 'ancient' manuscripts /archives, because In the means -Century, Low Saxon (Middle Low German ) was a very prominent language, which, among other things, served as the official language of the Hanseatic League.
Unfortunately nowadays this dialect is seen as 'countrified' and children at school only learn Dutch and the dialect is increasingly disappearing

At age sixteen I met my soulmate and we are happily married for 30 years now (2018) and blessed with five awesome children, two sons (age 29 and age 10), three daughters (age 28, 26 and 21) and one very cute granddaughter (age 1).

| M My great great grand mother Mattje Martsen Scholte next to her house, her husband and probably her adult sons in front of it, this was a traditional so called 'Spitkeet'('Spit shack')[6] in Opende, Friesland. People had to build it in one day (24 h) and than they would be the rightful owners of that piece of Land and the house, the little shed probably was a 'hen house', because of the mostly large families and because they were not allowed to expand the house after it was build, people built 'hen houses', the only way to 'expand' and create more room for either themselves or some of the many children |

And who doesn't ??! Our family, at some point, of course hit the 'Brick wall' , after many years finally and thanks Wiki tree (!) it finally was resolved and we got reconnected with a whole and for many years 'lost' (emigration USA) branche of our family. The new cousin Ronald from America who mailed me with 'just some questions' about some relatives, him standing at the other side of the same 'Brick wall', turned out to be a real kindred spirit and very active fellow genealogist, when we realized after some mailing and puzzling we really solved this huge Brick wall together and that we actually were cousins, well gues only fellow geneologists can understand how awesome this experience was for both of us solving this as direct descendants!

My cousin for many years had been trying to find the answer why the family had chosen Scholte for last name , so he asked if maybe I had any ideas , I didn't either, so I tried if I could find the answer for him ( myself) , and others of course who might also be curious about that, found, as he told me, the best answer for his question he had ever heard, so we both guess this is the most logical reason for the family name Scholte (why they took that for last name) interested ? see Sjoukje Geerts Scholte
'Interesting' and unexpected relatives
In my search for my husband and his family tree, I came across this family member, a 'famous' Dutch criminal Durk Tabak, how hilarious, cause at first , didn't know if and how he was related to my husband(!) we were making jokes that he probably was related to this criminal, my husband, always bragging about his family and their coat of arms, laughing and told me well I bet he's related to you somehow, since your family was poor and living in the area were mostly the poor and/or criminal lived. After more research I discovered there was no connection at all with my husband indeed and my husband was laughing his head of when he was right , this 'famous' criminal with no connection at all to my husband or his family , was...related to me ??! My great grandmother Trijntje Nicolai's sister Grietje Nicolai was his aunt.

stand van zaken projectprofielen: Ales heeft op ons verzoek alle post 1811 profielen met een tweede manager ontdaan van wikitree-14. (uitzondering PPP) En het is de bedoeling dat er geen nieuwe bijkomen. Na de Sourcathon gaan we een challenge organiseren waarbij alle andere project profielen van na 1811 zoveel mogelijk voorzien gaan worden van bronnen en er meteen bekeken wordt welke afgestoten kunnen worden. Hoe we het precies doen overleggen we dan. Als je wilt kun je meedenken over de vorm.

Ook maar even een berichtje op jouw profielpagina, aangezien ik niet weet of jouw emailproblemen inmiddels zijn opgelost. Ik zie dat je weer berichten aan het oppakken bent uit de Google Group email inbox. In prindipe hoef je op dit moment eigenlijk niets te doen, want we hebben de taken daar goed verdeeld. Maar als je iets oppakt of gedaan hebt kan je dan middels het taggen aangeven dat jij er mee bezig bent of dat het al is opgepakt? Anders zijn mensen onnodig met dezelfde dingen bezig, terwijl het al gedaan is. Ik heb je ook even getagd in een bericht zodat je ook kunt zien hoe je berichten aan mensen kunt toewijzen.
Zie ook de voorbeelden uit de afgelopen periode, waarmee je kunt zien wat er mee gedaan is en soms wie er mee bezig is.

De eerste stap in het verminderen van het aantal profielen van ons project zijn we aan het zetten: Het verwijderen van de PPP van profielen van na 1811 die niet van een notabele zijn. Daarvoor hebben we als aankondiging een G2G post aangemaakt en we plaatsen berichten op de profielen van de managers waarbij dat gebeurt. Dit is dat bericht:
As a first step in our quest for a more managable list of project managed profiles. We are going to review all post 1811 Project Protected Profiles. Every profile from this period which is not a notable profile will lose it's PPP-status.
Our reason for this measure is to get a list which conforms to the WikiTree rules for PPP's (wikitree uses a 200 years limit) We use 1811 becausee it is the start of the civil registration
Aangezien je zelf ook manager bent van een aantal van die profielen zul je het wel merken op je activity lijst.

Fijn dat je blij bent met mijn mede-leiderschap. Ik moet eerlijk bekennen dat toen we 1 september nog geen bericht van je hadden we aan de slag zijn gegaan in de veronderstelling dat je geen tijd, ruimte of zo had voor het the Netherlands project. Er is een nieuwe G2G-post gekomen voor nieuwe leden om zich aan te melden (op aanraden van een aantal leaders), een G2G-post om me voor te stellen en ik ben druk met Astrid, Margreet, Jan en Joop in discussie wat er allemaal aangepakt moet gaan worden. Het eerste waar we nu mee bezig zijn is nieuwe richtlijnen opstellen voor PPP's en PMP's. De voorzet is gedaan en er wordt over gediscussieerd in een G2Gpost waar alle leden van ons project kunnen reageren. Vanuit de leaders hebben we de go ahead om veel profielen los te laten en eventueel te verwezen. De discussie is nog gaande hoe en wat. Een ander onderwerp zijn de projectpagina's. Daar is ook een begin gemaakt met de stroomlijning en zorgen dat alles up to date is. De discussies van het leader/ccordinatorengroepje vinden plaats op discord. Elke avond komt daar van alles aan de orde dat we dan weer toevoegen aan de to do lijst. Zoals de structuur van de projectpagina's, Duidelijke keuze voor een naam (dutch roots/netherlands), het niet functioneren van de google group, plannen voor een opleidingstraject, meer vrijwilligers erbij betrekken, rol van categorien en stickers etc, etc. We willen de zaken rustig 1 voor 1 aanpakken. Voorlopig dus nog een heleboel werk. Kun en wil je daar een rol in spelen? Voor mij is goede communicatie daarbij essentieel. Hoop snel van je te horen en of je je bv. in discord bij de groep wil aansluiten.

Volgens Astrid is dit de beste manier om te zorgen dat een berichtje jouw bereikt, dus bij deze. Ik ben in mei gevraagd of ik Leader wilde worden binnen wikitree. Toen dat ter sprake kwam op Discord ontstond er het misverstand dat mensen dachten dat ik gevraagd was als Leader voor DRP wat dus helemaal niet aan de orde was op dat moment. Ik heb vorige week ja gezegd tegen het leader zijn. Ondertussen hebben de coördinatoren van DRP mij gevraagd om coleader te worden binnen DRP zodat taken die blijven liggen door de lastige communicatie opgepakt kunnen worden. Volgens wat ik gelezen heb op de helppagina's heeft zo'n groot project als Dutch Roots eigenlijk ook twee leaders nodig. Ik heb ja gezegd op hun verzoek maar wil zaken netjes aanpakken en het met jouw over een verdeling van de taken hebben. Wat heeft je voorkeur daarbij, wat is belangrijk etc. Dutch roots moet verder kunnen en op dit moment staat de boel stil. Zou je voor 1 september contact met me willen opnemen? We missen je. Heel erg. Is het niet fantastisch dat Eef zich opgeworpen heeft als co-leader? Je hebt al zolang naar een co-leader gezocht. Ik denk dat jullie elkaar enorm aanvullen.
Ik zie dat je al meer dan een maand niet actief was op WT. Hoop dat alles in "real" goed gaat en hou vingers gekruisd. Hoe gaat het met je mams? Zou dit alles niet hier posten als we via mail konden communiceren.

Ik mis iedereen ook vreselijk en wauw super dat Eef co leader is nu echt heel blij mee, heb door alles nog steeds niet veel tijd maar ga mijn best doen om een mail verstuurd te krijgen hoor, real life hectisch sinds oktober 2020 en nog steeds helaas ..maar met jou, Eef en natuurlijk iedereen die wel nog steeds tijd heeft en altijd zo super goed bezig zijn komt het helemaal goed hoor, dus dit bericht maakt me wel heul blij hoor...

Over the past three years I have been looking into the ancestry of my paternal family, and found that their roots in the Low Countries run deep. Lately, I have been tracing my branches who lived in Antwerp in the 15th and 16th centuries, through parish and schepenregister documents, as well as English records since they were shipping merchants in Antwerp and London. I would be grateful for the opportunity to create WikiTree pages for those I have documented through paper records.

WT organiseert dit jaar wekelijkse challenges onder de naam: “Year of Accuracy” We hebben er al veel aan gewerkt maar volgende week wordt een bijzondere.
Of je het nu leuk vindt of niet, we hebben deze week jouw hulp nodig om te laten zien waartoe wij als DRP in staat zijn - vanaf woensdag 9 juni en het is gedurende een week erna, start waarschijnlijk laat voor ons Nederlanders (na middernacht) - de uitdaging is om bakstenen muren neer te halen voor de Nederlandse genealoog Yvette Hoitink.
Ze deed geweldig onderzoek naar haar familie. Deze uitdaging gaat over laten zien dat het beter kan!
We hebben natuurlijk al DRP-leden die meedoen aan de challenge, maar de meeste deelnemers zijn Amerikanen. Ze hebben hulp nodig bij vertalingen, het vinden van betrouwbare bronnen, Nederlandse naamgevingsconventies (omdat we vóór 1811 in profielen zullen duiken en waarschijnlijk patroniemen moeten gebruiken en nooit tussennamen) en het toevoegen van biografieën. We zijn er zeker van dat buitenlanders hulp nodig hebben. En leer veel door deze uitdaging, maar ze hebben wat hulp van ons nodig.

If you like it or not, we need your help this week just to show what we as DRP are capable of - starting on Wednesday the 9th of June and it is during a week after, starts probably late for us Dutch (after midnight) - the challenge is to bring down brick walls for Dutch genealogist Yvette Hoitink.
She did great research on her family. This challenge is about showing we can do better!
We have, of course, already DRP members joining the challenge, but most participants are Americans. They will need help on translations, finding reliable sources, Dutch Naming Conventions (as we will dive into profiles before 1811 and probably need to use patronymics and never use Middle Names) and adding biographies. We are sure foreigners need help. And learn lots because of this challenge but they need some help from us.

Ik denk dat je gemist hebt dat er een Googlegroup gestart is door Eowyn voor de Belgen die nu weer onder de DRP vallen voorlopig.
Komende week - WT heeft dit jaar wekelijkse challenges, "Year of Accuracy" - is de DRP vooral aan de beurt omdat het gaat om het oplossen van brick walls van genealogiste Yvette Hoitink.
Een behoorlijke uitdaging en jouw hulp is gewoon nodig!!!!!!!! De challenge start a.s. woensdag, weet nog niet precies hoe laat, waarschijnlijk om 2.00 uur 's nachts voor ons. Maar Amerikanen helpen mee en zullen hulp bij o.a. vertalingen nodig hebben @ hulp: bij naming conventions, vertalingen, bronnen vinden. Ik hoop dat jullie keuken een beetje langzamer kan gaan vanaf woensdag en de week erna.

Curious if you could check out a profile for me. I changed the country name for the Netherlands in this profile as someone had put Holland. At the time it wasn't called the Netherlands, though. I put the Dutch Republic. Is there a better name for that era? https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Trembley-41

I think how you solved it was fine, the profile is a bit a problematic one, because it looked like there still were sources needed to determine where he was from exactly eeh?
But if you know for sure where someone was born and if h or she was Dutch, normally for the Dutch Profiles, we like to keep things simple for all members, so it's okay if members use the modern place/location for Dutch profiles, so the modern place, province and country. This way members don't have to struggle to figure out the exact historical versions (which can be quite a struggle/puzzle with all the wars going on and places ruled by or falling under so many different governments in sometimes just a few months or weeks. And this way, so if we use the modern locations, the location pin keeps working, so the pin is leading everyone interested to the exact and correct place) and for members interested in the historical places we can always add something to the bio about it of course. ;)

Sorry voor de late reactie, maar ik had het een beetje druk de afgelopen week. Ik ken het Dutch roots project en was ook van plan om lid te worden, maar ik weet nog niet zo goed hoe projecten werken technisch en de samenwerking en categoriseren enzo, maar daar kom ik vast wel achter. Als het goed is ben ik lid van het Indonesia project, maar heb meer het gevoel dat ik de enige ben. Zoals je in mijn bio kunt zien heb ik mijn eigen project gemaakt voor ambtenaren in Nederlands-Indië, zowel Europese als inlandsch bestuur. Echter is dit eerder een eenmansproject gebleken XD, heb vooral van Soedanese regenten veel losse profielen die ik tot nu toe tevergeefs heb geprobeerd te verbinden.

Sorry voor ook late reactie..pff, hier ook druk met verbouwen, als je wilt kan ik wel een link naar je eigen project toe voegen aan het Indonesia project, dat ook niet echt van de grond is gekomen..lol, dat komt natuurlijk vooral door waarschijnlijk gewoon weinig maar heel weinig echt actieve leden uit Indonesië en het vinden van bronnen is natuurlijk ook veel moeilijker. Projecten zijn vooral gestart om zo met zo veel mogelijk leden samen te kunnen werken aan alle profielen uit bijvoorbeeld een bepaald land, we hebben veel profielen die per gedcom (zonder bronnen) werden geïmporteerd of aangemaakt in het verleden (en soms nog steeds) dus er zijn duizenden profielen die nog bronnen nodig hebben en dat is dus waar we allemaal samen aan werken. Alles is uitgelegd op de project pagina en we hebben ook een Nederlands Portaal waar je eigenlijk alles over Wikitree (uitleg) in het Nederlands kunt vinden.

I just seen a update you posted for Jacob Gijsbertsen (bef.1660-bef.1716). Are you aware that This family and other family members are of the ancestors of a man known as Albert Zabriskie? Albert's real name is Jan Lubbertzsen van Edam, aka: Albert Zabriskie B:1632 Edam, Edam-Volendam, Noord-Holland, Netherlands D:15 Sep 1711 Hackensack, Bergen, New Jersey, USA His father the one who immigrated to USA is Lubbert Gijsbertzsen (van Blaricum) B:1601 Blaricum, Blaricum Municipality, Noord-Holland, Netherlands D:1 Sep 1655 Fort Orange, Peach Tree War September 15, 1655 His wife: Magdaleentje (van der Linden) Theunis van Voorhees B:1631 Netherlands D:1 Sep 1680
All the names you have connected to Barentson, Berret, Berent, are all just partial names for most of the Dutch. They moved and thus their names changed to the current towns and cities. This continued into the late 1600's, and a few into the 1700's. The last names of Van Blaricom and it's directives of other names associated are from the Van Blaricum family which I share DNA. While I had been searching for Albert Zabriskie for over 40 years, one day I ran across a web site that listed the Blaricom's as being related to Albert Zabriskie [Jan Lubbertszen]. At that point I searched for the link and found that George Olin Zabriskie the author also had a book on the Blaricom's. That was the hidden link for the Zabriskie families, they were really not Zabriskie's at all, they were all of the Van Blaircum bloodline which I share DNA and actually personally know someone of the last name. I threw together a book of sorts and published it to the web, It is only a rough draft that I had to get out there to avoid another person from slandering and having a case of Liable against his claims. I have intended this winter to to get further into the family lines, after school begins. If you are interested I will share the link here with you. Thanks for sharing ! And I think you mean this Jan Lubbertszen (from Edam) ? Many Dutch before 1811 only used patronymics and those names and patronymics were repeated all the time. So yes I'm aware and yes it's possible Jacob Gijsbertsen was a deeper ancestor (I didn't get that far (or to him) yet though, because I'm still trying to source/improve the Dutch (still 'gedcomish') part of that family ;)) But.. it's also possible he wasn't, because there were so many people in the Netherlands with the same names and patronymics (so there probably were thousands of Jacob Gijsbertsen's (Gijsberts, Gijsbertsz and probably more variants of the patronymic) .
With all the repeated names and patronymics and with the huge amount of people all over the Netherlands (and in for example New Netherland), all sharing the same names and patronymics, research can be very hard or very confusing, especially if people of and on used 'sort' of a last name or different ones / aka last names..because of course not every Jan Jansz you come across in various archives with similar dates but different places of Birth/marriage etc. is the same, but unfortunately sometimes researchers mixed people up, or tried to connected 'common or poor' ancestors to rich ones by inventing a person and by this connected their ancestor to a more Notable (wealthy) family , or the places they were born/coming from were added as last names which they didn't do themselves. Anyway, I'm sure you already know all this, but perhaps you find the Dutch Naming Convention handy ? We tried to explain it al a bit more there.

Heb een nieuw persoon aangemaakt en nu merk ik dat die al bestaat, nu zijn er dus twee dezelfden, toevallig is het eentje die jij ook aangemaakt hebt. Het gaat om Sijntko Derks-66 en Sijntko Derks 322. Hoe nu verder?

Geen ramp hoor, dit gebeurt wel vaker omdat duplicaten of als je misschien eentje aanmaakt, niet altijd 'gezien' worden door het systeem (dat is ook 1 van de redenen waarom veel profielen (en vooral patroniemen) PPP hebben). Ik heb de duplicaten gemerged (samengevoegd) en je een berichtje gestuurd met wat meer uitleg, bij het Nederlands portaal hebben we een wat meer uitgebreide uitleg over het mergen, maar mocht je nog vragen hebben over mergen of iets anders, dan weet je ons wel te vinden he.
Je bent super goed bezig hoor, dus bedankt voor je enthousiasme en het toevoegen van al die tot nu toe nog missende profielen, het is geweldig als daardoor profielen die tot nu toe geen ouders hadden daardoor eindelijk verbonden kunnen worden met ouders/voorouders !

Ik doe wat ik doe op Wikitree omdat ik het graag doe en omdat ik me mee verantwoordelijk voel voor de "missie" van WT, en niet zozeer voor de badges, maar het voelt natuurlijk wel heel goed en motiverend om te weten dat het geapprecieerd wordt, zeker door super-superstars zoals jij :)

I hope all is well with you and yours! I saw the thank Bea post on G2G and looked your profile up again. I then noticed your GEDmatch kitnumbers and I compared them to my DNA and that of some 8 DNA-kits Van der Heide related I manage. You don't pop up on MyHeritage as a match, but on GED-match (when setting the treshold minimum cM's to 3 instead of default 7), I see some very interesting results! I really believe that we have clues to research our DNA-relation on a deeper level! When able, I'd really like to get in touch on the matter!

Heb je zin om mee te doen met de eerstvolgende DRP Challenge? We hebben je er graag bij! Het gaat vooral om hulp, gezelligheid en elkaar beter leren kennen. Duurt van 30 december tot 6 januari. I think we made around 5000 euro's so not so bad.
