Biography

Jonas was born 25 Mar 1804 in Skoger, the son of Anders Aaserud and Kari Jonasdatter. He was baptized 25 March 1804 at the Skoger Church.[1] Jonas was confirmed in the Lutheran Faith on 16 August 1818 in Skoger on the same day as his elder brother, Ole Andersen Aaserud, was confirmed. According to the record, Ole was baptized in 1802 and Jonas was baptized 25 March 1804.[2]

Jonas purchased Aaserud, the farm of his birth, at a public auction in1838, when he was thirty-two years old, for 1,950 spd. His wife, Marthe Marie, was the daughter of the husmann, or cottager, of an adjoining farm.

Together, they managed the farm and raised a family of five children. Jonas's father, Anders, was living at the time Jonas purchased the farm and must have enjoyed the idea of his son being a farm owner.

Jonas married Marthe on 22 April 1837 at the Skoger Church. He was 32 and she was 20 when they got married. [3]

At the time of the 1865 Norway Census, Jonas and Marthe were living at the farm Aaserud, where Jonas was the farmer and farm owner. Also living in the household with them were their children: Andreas, age 28; Ole, age 23; Kristian, age 20; Martin, age 13, and Jørgen, age 11. The family had a servant named Grethe Christiansdatter, age 38, with them, as well as a ward, a poor man named Svend Austad, age 67 from Drammen.[4]

Marthe died 7 Sep 1872 at the age of 55 and was buried 13 September 1872 at the Skoger Church. [5]

At the time of the 1875 census, Jonas was living at the Aaserud farm, along with two of his sons, Kristian and Jørgen, both of whom were unmarried. The sons were listed as the farmers, while Jonas was listed as living on the farm on a pension. There were also servants: Inger Emilie Jørgensdatter, born 1857 in Skoger, Gertrud Knudsdatter, born 1854 in Nes i Hallingdal, and Johan Johnsen, a fattiglem, unmarried, of Skoger Fattigvaesen, born 1865. One of the servants, Inger Emilie, ended up getting married to one of the brothers, Martin.[6]

Jonas died 23 September 1886 at Skoger and his remains were buried 2 October 1886 at the Skoger Church.[7]
