Biography

Orthography: Abbee, Abbei, Abbey, Abbie, Abby, Abbye

Obadiah Abbe was born at Wenham, Massachusetts about between 1647 and 1652.[1] His father was John Abbe the immigrant.[2] His mother is presumed Mary ____ (sometimes called Mary Loring).[1]

Residence

He was one of the early settlers and an original proprietor of Enfield, living on the 8th lot from the south corner, east side.[1][2]

Occupation/Community

The inventory of his father's estate (John Abbe-11) says that he desired to prepare Obadiah for a future trade, so at the age of 18 years Obadiah was placed as a servant to Richard Goldsmith until the age of 21 years so he could be taught to be a shoemaker. From age to 21 years, his father, John Abbe provided him with meat, drink, clothes washing and lodging.[3]

A prominent man, he was:[1]

  • Constable between 1682 and 1717
  • Surveyor of highways in 1692
  • Assessor in 1702.

Marriage

He married a first wife whose name is unknown.[2] At Enfield, sometime after 1697 Obadiah married Sarah (Tibbals) (Collins) Warriner, as her third husband. She was born November 29, 1654, the daughter of Thomas Tibbals of Milford, and widow of both Daniel Collins, by whom she had children, and Joseph Warriner of Enfield (died there 21 April 1697).[1][2]

Abbe-Abbey Genealogy (1916) says that Obadiah Abbe had no children,[1] but in 1897, Anson Titus claimed Obadiah had a daughter Abigail who married Daniel Sabin in Windham, 1701.[4]

Land

Obadiah owned a home lot in Enfield of 12 acres; 23 acres South Field; 7 acres Schantuck River; 5 acres upland, 2 meadow; 2 acres of meadow east from the "grate meadow;" 4 acres meadow by a march 5, 1700 grant; a 168 farm he received on November 17, 171[_].[1]

Death and Legacy

Obadiah made his will at Northampton, dated September 22, 1732 and probated November 14, 1732.[1]

Named in his will were his wife Sarah; his cousin (nephew) Thomas, the son of his brother Thomas; Obadiah (Thomas's son); Phebe Heal (his wife's daughter); John, (son of his cousin John Abbey). Thomas Abbey (his cousin) and Elizabeth Warriner were named as executors.[1]
