Biography

John Swetland Abbe was born Sept 2, 1787 or Sept 26, 1788 at Longmeadow, Massachusetts; the son of Abner Abbe and his wife Sarah (Swetland).[1]

John was a farmer and large land owner.[1]

On Sept. 1, 1813 John indicated his intentions to marry Mrs. Electa (Chapin) Warner of Springfield. They were married at Springfield on September 26, 1813. She was born in Springfield on December 18, 1773; the daughter of Colonel Abel and Doreas (Chapin) Chapin and she was the widow of Dr. Pearly Warner; with him she had four children.[2][3]

John died of consumption (congestion of lungs) on May 10, 1862 at Springfield at the age of 74 years and was buried at East Street Cemetery. His wife Electa died October 20, 1857 in Springfield.[4][5][6][7]

  1. Julia Ann Abbe b 2 July 1814 at Springfield; d 6 Jan 1905. A teacher prior to marriage. m. 3 Jan 1854 at Springfield to Charles Henry Curtiss a farmer from New York. no children. He d 7 Sep 1891 at Lowville, N.Y.; his first marriage was to Mary Lyman who d 6 May 1853 and they had children.[7][8]
  2. John Alden Abbe (1st) b. 14 Mar 1816; d. 26 Apr 1816 in Springfield at the age of six weeks.[7][9]
  3. John Alden Abbe (2nd) b. 13 Aug 1817 m. Caroline Pease on 1 Jan 1846 at Wilbraham.[10][11]
  4. Harriet Jenks Abbe b. 10 Aug 1820; m. Enoch Cooley Chapin.[12][13][14]
  5. Isabelle Abbe b. 4 Oct 1822; d. 4 Apr 1851, age 29 years. not m.[15][7]
