Death of Mr Abbey.— Our Bussel ton correspondent writes under date 21st June : — King Death has been very busy here lately. It is my sad duty to report the death of another old and respected resident of the dis trict — Mr David Abbey — who died at his daughter's residence on Monday night after a short illness brought on by a severe cold which he neglected. The deceased was the eldest son of the late Mr Thomas Abbey, and was born near Busselton in October, 1842, and was therefore nearly 58 years of age.
He married a number of years ago, and settled on some land near Newtowu, and for a number of years was fairly successful in farming. His wife, however, persuaded him to give up farming and try hotel business. This was a very unwise step for him, for at the time he started in business, as a pub lican in the old Commercial Hotel, Busselton, as times were bad, and he had the misfortune to lose his wife shortly after commencing business. After a brief period as a publican he retired a poorer, though perhaps a wiser man. He leaves four sons and one daughter (two of his daughters died several years ago), the youngest son, aged about 18, was unfortun ately seized with a paralytic stroke, and had to be taken into the hospital the very day the father died. He is, however, recovering and will be able shortly to leave the hospital.
The funeral of the deceased took place yesterday, and was attended by persons from all parts of the district. The Rev Wilson conducted the funeral service. The pall-bearers were Messrs G W Barnard, Sr, G Cross, Sr, P Carter, H Carter, T A. Thurkle and J Harwood ; the chief mourners were three of his sons, his daughter and son-in-law, his three brothers, John, Nathaniel and Thomas, Mrs T Abbey and family, Mr John Abbey's family, besides a great number of near relatives and friends of the Abbey family, A number of beautiful wreaths were placed upon the coffin. Messrs Hough and Donald were the under takers.[4]
