I have researched no further than a quick review of the Bitonto records available at http://www.antenati.san.beniculturali.it/ where this surname appears to be quite common.
According to the marriage documents, Nicola's parent were Francesco and Anna Maria Calamito. Francesco appears to be still living in 1873 while Anna Maria is deceased by 1870.
IF his son Sebastiano's 1908 immigration record is accurate, Nicola was still living (in Castelnuovo) at that time.
Nicola was some type of merchant or trader according to his children's records.
