A genealogy note by Kathy Fenton, ca 2013
Walter ABBOTT of Thetford VT was born abut 1749 and died 15 Jan 1823, age 74.He married Persis CUSHMAN (1750-1843, age 94). They are buried (together with many of their family) in South Fairlee (Ely) cemetery. Walter and Persis were in Thetford by June 1774, as seven children were baptized there between 1774 and 1797, and another was born (perhaps in NH, where they reportedly married) before that as he was of age by 1795. Walter served in the VT militia at least twice during the Revolutionary War. Files at the Thetford historical society include letters from a descendant. She said (about 1934) that "Walter Abbott is supposed to have been son of or descended from a Capt. Samuel Abbott, a sea Capt. who had a brother Benjamin."A later letter says "the father of Augustus and Eliphalet was Walter, and that they were of a sea Capt. - Capt. Samuel ABBOTT, who had a brother Benjamin and possibly one George; they came from England to Stonington, Ct." We have never found any clues to Walter Abbott's place of birth or parents, but his wife Persis CUSHMAN was from Lebanon CT, daughter of James Cushman and Levina Downer. Does any one have any further information on Walter's ancestry?Or any information on any ABBOTT family in the Stonington CT area during the early 1700s?
