Biography

Beriah was born about 1758. He was the son of Daniel Abbott and Rachel Abbot.[1] He passed away in 1832.[2] Beriah married first Mary Andrews and married second Martha Griswold.

Military

Beriah served during the Revolution for a total of six and one half years, was taken prisoner, and escaped by running away. [3]

In January 1776, Beriah Abbott enlisted for a term of one year in Captain Joshua Abbott’s foot company. Beriah Abbott served as a private in the New Hampshire regiment enlisting 22 March 1777 for a three-year term and was discharged 20 March 1780. He again enlisted 29 May 1781 for a three-year term in Captain Daniel Livermore’s company. He was discharged 7 June 1783 the last year of his enlistment being provided by a substitute that Beriah procured.[4]

He applied for a pension on 20 April 1818 giving his age as 60 years old. He related that he had infirmities and a broken constitution which he attributed to his hard and long military service. He further reported having to care for his 75-year-old sister-in-law which was a great bother to him. He reported just one child, Moses then aged 33 who had a large family to support and was greatly in debt. The inventory included as part of the pension application showed real estate valued at $850 for 53 acres of land with buildings, $50 as the value of a share in the New Hampshire turnpike road, and a personal estate of $52.28.[5]

Beriah Abbott and Mary Andrews had one child.
