He was a farmer and lived in Andover, Massachusetts, as well as Wilton and Packersfield, (now Nelson), New Hampshire.[2] At the time of the American Revolution he resided in Wilton.[3][4]
Joseph became a Sergeant in Captain Nathan Ballard's Company, mustering out of Wilton. The company was ordered to march to Ticonderoga, New York on 29 June 1777. They first arrived at Fort No. 4 in Charlestown at which point they were ordered home, making it all the way to Dublin, New Hampshire, before being ordered to march post haste to Fort Ticonderoga. Upon reaching Otter Creek, word was received of the evacuation of Ticonderoga. His enlistment in the war at this time encompassed the days between June 20 and July 12, 1777.[4]
The records of the town of Packersfield, (now Nelson), New Hampshire, show that he came to the town sometime within the next ten years, and built his home in the northern part of town. He would become the Town Moderator for town meetings in 1787 and for many years after.[4]
He married Mary Barker[5] and died of cancer in 1792.[2]
