Thomas Abbott was born about 1833 in Wigtown, Wigtownshire this is estimated based on census information. He is believed to have been the son of a Jane or Janet Ranalds or Ronalds (~1801 England - ), however a birth record has not been identified.

In the 1841 Scotland Census Thomas is said to be 9 years old and residing with his mother Jane Ranalds, 40, at Laigh Vennel in Wigtown, Wigtownshire^[4]

In the 1851 Scotland Censys Thomas is said to be 17 years old and employed as a Mole Catcher. He resides in the household of his employer Mary McGarva a Mariner's Wife in Clayhole, Stranraer^[5]

In the 1861 Scotland Census Thomas is said to be a 23 year old Mole Catcher residing with his mother Janet Ronalds, who was said to have been born in England, in a 1 room home on West Side Vennel in Wigtown, Wigtownshire^[6].

Thomas Abbott and Jane Thomson were said to be married however a record of this has not as yet been identified.
