Biography

JOHN ABBOTT, born at Andover, Massachusetts, 24 Jan 1769 son of John Abbott and Hannah Farnum;[1] John died at Andover, Maine, 7 Jan 1833;[2] married at Andover, Massachusetts, 29 May 1788,[3] RUTH LOVEJOY, born at Pepperell, Massachusetts, 5 Apr 1764 daughter of Nathan Lovejoy and Apphia Hoyt;[4] Ruth died at Andover, Maine, 18 Apr 1843.[5]

John Abbott and his wife Ruth Lovejoy settled in what would become Andover, Maine soon after their marriage. They kept a farm.

At the first town meeting of Andover, Maine on 22 June 1804, John Abbott, Jr. was chosen selectman.[6] John Abbott was a trustee of the Congregational church at Andover in 1823.[7]

In 1810, the household of John Abbot was thirteen persons at East Andover, Oxford County: one male 26 to 44, one female 26 to 44, three males under 10, one male 10 to 15, two males 16 to 25, one female under 10, two females 10 to 15, and two females 16 to 25.[8] The family was recorded as eight persons in 1820: one male 50 to 59, one female 60 to 69, two males 10 to 15, one male 16 to 18, one male 19 to 25, and two females 16 to 25.[9]

John Abbot did not leave a will and John Rolfe of Rumford was named administrator of the estate on 28 May 1833 at the request of Ruth Abbot and John Abbot. Francis Cushman and Enoch Adams were sureties for the bond. The home farm on the west side of the Ellis River was valued at $1,100 and personal estate was $753.34. The debts of the estate exceeded its value. Widow Ruth Abbot was allowed $300 in value from the personal estate. A license was given to sell the estate to settle the debts. Creditors of the estate received 78 cents on the dollar.[10]
