Biography

Joseph Abbott, Jr. was born February 27, 1743 at Woodstock, Windham County, Connecticut. He was a son of Joseph Abbot and Abigail Cutler.[1]

He married Persis Perrin on January 3, 1765 at Woodstock.[2]

Joseph Abbott settled in Pittstown, then Albany County, in 1787 or 1788, and on January 27, 1789, purchased the farm where he spent the rest of his life.[3][4]

He died on January 26, 1813 at Pittstown, Rensselaer, New York and was buried in the East Pittstown Methodist Cemetery.[5]

Joseph Abbott and Persis Perrin started their family at Woodstock and relocated to Pittstown after the births of their children.

In his will dated 3 April 1812 (probate 9 February 1813), Joseph Abbott leaves all the household furniture to wife Persis and son Royal Abbott is to care for her. Daughter Orinda Hinman receives $50 in addition to the amount she has already received. Daughter Hannah Clapp receives $200. Daughter Lucy Bennette receives the note in the sum of $134.40 that he holds for her husband Jedediah Bennette. The other household furnishings are divided among his three daughters. The remainder of the estate goes to son Royal Abbott who is also named executor.[7]

Joseph and Persis Abbott had five children.

i ORINDA ABBOTT, b. at Woodstock, 26 May 1766; d. likely at Hartwick, NY; m. at Brooklyn, CT, 20 Oct 1785, ASAPH ADAMS, b. at Pomfret, 30 Jun 1759 son of Noah and Merriam (Adams) Adams; Asaph d. at Hartwick, 25 Mar 1808 (probate 15 Jun 1808). Orinda later married someone named Hinman (as evidenced by her father’s will); nothing further known about that marriage at this time.

ii HANNAH ABBOTT, b. at Woodstock, 3 Aug 1768; d. at Waterville, OH, 20 Jun 1850; m. 1st, LEMUEL CLAPP. Hannah m. 2nd, Dr. PARIS PRAY, b. in RI, about 1786 son of John and Deborah (Wade) Pray; Paris d. at Waterville, 7 Jan 1850.

iii LUCY ABBOTT, b. at Woodstock, 20 Sep 1772; d. at Otsego County, NY, 8 Aug 1846; m. Jan 1793, JEDEDIAH BENNET, b. 16 Jun 1773; Jedediah d. at Otsego, 10 Dec 1844.

iv POLLY ABBOTT, b. at Woodstock, 23 Jul 1775; d. at Pittstown, NY, Jun 1800.

v ROYAL ABBOTT, b. at Woodstock, 9 Oct 1777; d. at Pittstown, 22 Mar 1859; m. about 1802, WILMIRA VAN WOERT, b. 24 May 1783 daughter of Johannes and Catalina Lansing (Faterh) van Woert; Wilmira d. at Pittstown, 4 Oct 1865.

Is there any indication that Joseph Abbott participated in the Revolutionary War? There were a few Joseph Abbotts who did and he was about the right age.
