Biography

William Allen Abbott was born in Halstock, Dorset, England about June 1846, and christened on 21 June 1846 in Halstock. His parents were Richard and Emily Abbott.[1][2][3] (His employment record lists him as born on 30 May 1848;[4] however while the 30 May date is probably correct, his birth year was more likely 1848 based on multiple other records.)

In the 1851, 1861 and 1871 England census, he is living with his parents and siblings in Halstock.[5][6] As of the 1871 census, and at age 23 his occupation is listed as "bootmaker", a trade which he learned from his father.

William Allen Abbott married Susanna Goldring in 1871 in Preston and Sutton Poyntz, Dorset, England. The marriage banns were published on 16, 23 and 30 July.[7]

In 1881, William Abbott (born about 1849 in Halstock) was married to Susanna Abbott (born about 1855 in N Ampersham, Dorset). They were living in Acton, Middlesex. He was a railway porter. They had two children, Beatrix R (8) and Florence L (2). His sister Theresa Abbott (22) was living with them; she was unmarried and listed as an out of employment servant.[8][9]

In 1891, William Abbott (born about 1849 in Halstock) was widowed, and living in Acton with his children Beatrice (18), Walter (7) and Leonard (6).[10]

The employment records for Great Western Railway indicate that William Allen Abbott, born 30 May 1848, was hired as a porter in May 75 at the Aylesbury station, and in September 1875 was transferred to the Acton station. He was apparently disciplined in 1889 for using the ladies room. In 1992, he was a ticket collector at the Royal Oak station.[4]

William Allen Abbott, born about 1846, died in 1896 and was buried on 6 Feb 1896 in St Mary, Acton, England.[11] This is consistent with his employment record, which indicates he died and his last payment was January 1897.[4]

Research Notes

Note: There is a record for another William Abbott, christened in Halstock on 19 July 1846, with parents Charles and Sarah Abbott.[12] And a William Abbott, christened in Wambrook, Dorset on 21 Mar 1847, with parents George and Sarah Abbott.[13]

There is also record of William Allen Abbott, born about 1847, whose death was registered in first quarter 1897 in Chelsea registration district, London.[14]
