Biography

Mary was born in Providence, Rhode Island, 1837 the daughter of Benjamin Abbott and Lucy Wood Abbott,.

During the American Civil War she served for six months as a volunteer nurse in the Jefferson General Hospital, Jeffersonville, Indiana.[1]

She married Melanthon Woolsey Lansing on January 24, 1865 in Elkhart, Indiana. [2]

They had three children, all born in Goshen, Indiana:[3]

  1. Alida P. Lansing, born Oct. 15, 1867
  2. Charles Abbott Lansing, born Sept. 19, 1868; died in Denver, July 10, 1890.
  3. Helen Livingston Lansing, born July 18, 1870.

The 1880 U.S. Census recorded the family at 633 Larimer Street in Denver, Colorado. M. W. Lansing was listed as 43 years old and a mail agent who suffered from rheumatism. His wife Mary was listed as 41 years old. Others in the household were daughter Alida, 13; son Charles, 11; daughter Nellie, 9; and Mary's sister Lucy Abbott, 45.[4]

Apparently the marriage came to an end by about 1885.

Melancthon Lansing married Annie Jordan on August 7, 1886 in Swanzey, New Hampshire; the record of that marriage describes him as a widower.[5]

The 1900 United States Census recorded Mary A. Lansing in Denver, Colorado, as head of household and "landlady." Her birthdate was recorded as July 1838, but it appears that her age was originally written as 62 (which is consistent with a birth in July 1837) and marked over with the number 61. She was described as a widow, but other sources indicate that her husband Melancthon Lansing was still living. She had had three children, of whom two were living. Others in the household included daughter Elida L. Hutton, born in Indiana in October 1868; son-in-law William E. Hutton, a lawyer, who was born in Wisconsin in August 1872; twin grandchildren Helen Hutton and John L. Hutton, born in April 1900 and two months old at the time of the census in June 1900; and daughter Helen L. Crilly, a widow with no children, born July 1872 and working as the keeper of a millinery store.[6]

In March 1900, she filed a claim for a military pension as an invalid, stating that she was a "Nurse, Med. Dept. U.S. Vols."[7]

I added this as a comment because I don't know the basis for the parents that are currently identified for her in her husband's profile.
