Biography

Joseph Carter Abbott was born 15 July 1825, Concord, Merrimack, New Hampshire. He is the son of Aaron Abbott and Nancy Badger.[2]

Joseph studied Law at Concord, in 1852 Joseph was admitted to the bar. Joseph was the owner and editor of the Daily American Newspaper from 1852 to 1857. He became the editor of the Boston Atlas and Bee in 1859, and held that job until 1861.

Joseph married his first wife Delia Whipple about 1853, she was born in 1832, died 4 December 1854.

On 26 July 1855, daughter Delia W. Abbott died, she was 10 months, 12 days old, Mother's name wasn't listed on death record. [3]

Joseph held the position of adjutant general for New Hampshire from 1855 to 1861.

12 September 1861, Joseph C. Abbott, Officer married Harriet C. Tasker, teacher. Joseph was a widower entering his second marriage, this was Harriet's first marriage. [4] Harriet died 12 January 1865.

Joseph Carter Abbott served in the United States Civil War.

In December of 1861, Joseph C. Abbott became the Lieutenant Colonel of the 7th Regiment, New Hampshire Infantry. In November of 1863 he became the Colonel of the Regiment. On 25 January 1865, President Abraham Lincoln nominated him for brevet brigadier general, on 14 February 1865, the Senate confirmed this appointment.

In 1868, he was elected to the US Senate, representing North Carolina. He served from 14 July 1868 to 4 March 1871. Legislature failed to elect successor, vacant March 4, 1871 – January 30, 1872.

On 20 April 1880, Joseph married Ellen C. Tasker. [5]
