Remarks: Studio portrait. Former member of the North West Mounted Police (Sgt Major 314). Came to Canada from England in 1871 and was stationed at Kingston as Artillery drill instructor. Came west in 1873 and served at Fort Walsh and Maple Creek. Retired in 1884 and farmed south-west of Maple Creek. Served as Captain of Home Guards, 1885. Operated shoe and harness repair shop. Chain made in Sheffield, England.
However, Scace and Associates Ltd. (1978:51-52) indicated that while some of the married officers did live in the town, others obtained permission to live south of the NWMP post near Edward McKay, citing the examples of Sergeant-Major Abbott and Regan, the NWMP carpenter. These two men are listed as belonging to Households 19 and 17 respectively.
