Research Notes

Lena Zogg (Zogg-9) was attached to Robert Zogg as a sister. I think it is likely that she was entered in error as a sister. More likely, she is Robert's wife but was not entered under her maiden name. Abegg-54. This has been researched and proven and merge was proposed and completed.

Zogg-9 and Abegg-54 appear to represent the same person because: Same information; Lena entered under the married name by mistake

Andrea, I looked over the merge and it wants to merge Magdalina Abegg INTO Lena Zogg, which isn't correct. There is an option to reverse the merge but I wanted you to be aware of this before I did it. This means that the surviving profile will be Abegg-54. I have to leave for a few hours and I want to clean up the research notes before I complete the merge, so it will be done by tomorrow. Thanks and hope all is well with you.
Hi Karen,

No rush ... You are right of course it should be merged into Abegg not Zogg, I probably should stay away from WikiTree after a few glasses of wine ;). Thanks for pointing it out. All is well here, hope you are staying safe too.

Hi Karen,

Looks like the merge has been completed correctly and I did not get any notification to the contrary. So it should be all ok. Have you tried the automated 'Ancestry GEDCOM Cleanup Tool'? I used it a few times and it does a very nice job.

Don't worry .... It has been a very steep learning curve for me too since I signed up a few months ago. Still get myself in a pickle now and again. Love working with you on this family and their individual profiles too :).

I have tried the tool and it does work very nicely, but I forgot to save the link to my notepad and now I can't find it. Gedcom clean-up without it is a very daunting job. I still have a little clean up to do but it doesn't look too bad. I am going to fix all the Ancestry links that don't work or replace them with FSFT links that do work. Little steps when I have time.
HAHA, nevermind my forgetfulness, I just remembered that the tool only works on Chrome and I usually use Firefox, so I'm good now.
Lol, it never stops does it ;). You'll get there eventually.

Hi Karen,

I added a 'Research Note' section and entered the references I found in the church books in Walenstadt. The links in the reference should get you straight to the free online image. Let me know if you have any questions. If I find any more notes on them, I'll let you know.

well done!!! both for finding Robert Zogg's parents and for finding the Abegg documentation. The second one would be Andrew who lived in Belleville, is matched to the 1860 and 1870 census. The other one, born in 1811, if he emigrated, might have gone to Iowa, as I find naturalization for an Anthon there.

NOW----to change the tree on FSFT and also try to get all the Ancestry trees changed.

Thank you for finding that source...I'm positive it is correct. Can I have your permission to use it on FSFT and Ancestry ?

Would you like me to e-mail you the newspaper articles about Robert Zogg and his family from the Belleville paper? I can put them all on Google Drive and send you a link in a PM.

Hi Karen,

Happy to have solved two little puzzles ... No problem at all using the source, the more sourced information the better, especially freely available ones. Regarding Robert Zogg, I would like to take you up on the offer re newspaper articles. They give so much insight into ancestors' past. Thank you.

Hi Karen,

I agree, the familysearch tree is great for possible hints but like anything unsourced can be somewhat suspicious. It certainly is so in the case of Robert Zogg. Nevermind, I am pretty chuffed though as I have finally found Robert's parents Christian and Martha! I'll have to do some more research but it looks like Robert knew the Abegg's from home.

Thanks Karen,

I adopted Robert Zogg because the name has a very small circle of origin in Switzerland and my mother's maiden name is Zogg. Although all my efforts of finding him have so far eluded me, I will continue to search for him. In my search for him last night, I have come across some Abegg that are possibly the parents of Magdalena. They are listed as having migrated to the US in 1849 with their 2 firstborn children Robert and Maria. I'll post the details to this profile later on for you to have a look.

Andrea, I will be away from the computer for an hour or two but I did contact my Abegg cousin....spent hours chatting about health and family...LOL but she sent me a phone number for a Robert Zogg descendant near Belleville, St. Clair, IL. She also sent me pictures and I think some more information but I haven't had time to look at it yet. I also spent some time going through the Belleville newspaper and found a lot of stories about Robert and his business and children, etc.

I didn't realize you were related or I would have copied the best ones. I also have all of the quarterlies from the local gen soc that I can look through. I'm sure I will be able to get the info you are looking for.

I'll help you any way I can. Question: are you in Switzerland? You seem to be able to find Swiss sources easily, which is a good thing.

TTYL Karen

Fantastic ... I grew up in Sevelen in the Swiss Rheintal but moved to Australia in my 20s. It helps to be familiar with the way local churches recorded events. Robert would be a very distant relative but they all count don't they. The newspapers are one resource I have not looked at but will sure check them out soon.

The state archive in the canton St. Gallen in Switzerland has made all old church registers freely available on their website which is invaluable. I will, of course, assist in any way I can in your research in Switzerland.

Australia is great but I would love to live in Switzerland. I live in a small town in Illinois that was founded by Swiss emigrants in 1836, so almost everyone here has Swiss ancestors, except me...German all the way.

I don't know if you have checked the Zogg name out on FamilySearch.org, but the Belleville line (Christian Zogg) goes back on there to 1568. Accuracy isn't guaranteed, as it is a community tree like wikiTree is. It is a very helpful research tool.

As far as newspapers goes, the one I was looking at is behind a paywall at the Belleville Gen Soc but if you find a connection to Christian Zogg and his wife Martha Wohlwend I will get you copies of obits.

Hi Karen,

I think there is a duplicate to Magdalin in Lena Zogg, Zogg-9. It looks like Robert's wife Lena was entered under her married name and attached as his sister instead of his wife.

posted by Andrea Staub
Thanks for letting me know. I will do some checking. This is a profile that I adopted because of the Abegg connection and know nothing of the Zogg line. I will get back to you within 24 hours after I attempt to contact the originator, who is no longer on WikiTree but is a cousin.
