Biography

He had 2 wives and children from both wives.

Ferdinand Abel was born in 1827 in Hanvover, Germany. Ferdinand Abel married Lena Schonenberg circa 1854. Before 1860,his wife, Lena Schonenberg died in Germany. Ferdinand Abel married Caroline Matzke circa 1865 in Germany. Ferdinand Abel and Caroline Matzke immigrated to Queensland on 5 November 1870. Ferdinand 42 and Caroline H 32 travelled on the Humboldt with their children August Albert aged 12, Friedrick Wilhelm 3 and infant Maria Louise. Ferdinand Abel was naturalised in 1873 in Queensland. He and Caroline Matzke appeared on the Electoral Roll in 1903 living at Abel's Farm, Cawdor. Ferdinand was a farmer and Caroline carried out home duties. Their son Johann also lived on the farm with his wife Lissie. Between 1908 and 1909 applied for the old age pension. On 15 August 1910,his wife, Caroline Matzke died in Queensland. In August 1910 Ferdinand was struck by a train. A report of the incident appeared in "The Courier Mail" on the 31 August. It read:-Age's Immunity. There are two fortunate old persons in Queensland, for they have just come through railway accidents without much injury. A report received by the Commissioner from the Traffic Manager at Toowoomba states that an old man was seen walking along the railway line at 105 railed, and the driver of an approaching train sounded the whistle and applied the brakes. The man was apparently lightly struck by the engine and knocked down. The Government Medical Officer examined him on his arrival at Toowoomba, and found he was unhurt except for a few skin abrasions His name was Ferdinand Abell and he was said to be 82 years of age. In the second instance, Mrs Wilson was boarding the train at Albion as it was moving off, and was dragged along the platform for about 10 yards before, the tram was stopped. She was unhurt. Mrs Wilson is nearly 8O years of age , she expressed regret for her action in attempting to board a moving train, and said that "nothing of the kind would happen again." Ferdinand Abel died on 20 November 1910 in Queensland. He was buried in Cabarlah Cemetery. He is buried with his wife Caroline.
