Biography

Burford Franklin Abel was born in Dayton, Rhea, Tennessee on 26 Jul 1897, a son of Franklin Abel and Mary Marcella Coulter. The 1920 census noted that he was single in January and a manager at Excelsior Mills in Cleveland, Bradley, Tennessee. On 26 Aug 1920 he married Nelle Marie Rogers in Cleveland's Broad Street Methodist Church. Nelle was a daughter of William Hurd Bascomb Rogers (1851-1925) and Hannah May Hill (1867-?) Burford and Nelle had two children, Mary Hill and Franklin Rogers, both born in Cleveland. By April 1930 the family was in Carriere, Pearl River County, Mississippi where Burford operated a general merchandise store. Within five years he had moved his business to Gulfport, Harrison, Mississippi where he operated the Home Furniture Company. He died in the Gulf Coast Community Hospital in Biloxi on 05 Jul 1978. He and Nelle were buried in Southern Memorial Park Cemetery in Biloxi.
