Joseph was born about 1839 in England. He was the son of Joseph Abell and Ann King. He married Sarah Jane Thompson from Detroit, USA in 1861 in Ontario. They farmed in the East Zorra, Oxford Co., Ontario area. He passed away in 1896 in Otterville, Ontario.

Joseph and Sarah had a son Thomas Arthur on 13 Sept 1878 in Oxford, Ontario. There is no other information about their son.
