Birth About 1822 • France at Saint Omer according to Anne Whitehead's book. However in 1861 and 1871 censuses Jane and her mother are born "Middlesex London"

Marriage 23 Nov 1848 • Stoke Damerel, Devon, England: Jane Elizabeth Balcombe Abell age 23 of George Street; Charles Edward Johnstone age 22 of St Pancras.^[1]

On the 23rd November last, at Stoke Church, Devonshire, by the Rev. W. J. St. Aubyn, M A, Charles Edward, eldest son of George Johnson, Esq., of Tavistock square, London, and of Broncroft Castle, Salop, to Jane Elizabeth Balcombe, only child of Edward Abell, Esq., and grand daughter of William Balcombe, Esq., late Colonial Treasurer of New South Wales.^[2]

JOHNSTONE.—On the 11th inst., at No. 6 Victoria-square, London, Elizabeth Lucia Balcombe, widow of the late Charles Johnstone, of Bancroft Castle, and granddaughter of the late William Balcombe, first Colonial Treasurer of New South Wales (By cable.)^[3]
