Biography

Sir James Abercrombie, son of Sir Alexander Abercrombie and Elizabeth Baird, was born in 1683 in Fife, Scotland. He was the second Baronet of Birkenbog. In 1720 he emigrated to South Carolina, but he also kept his home in Scotland and visited back and forth. He was British Attorney General in South Carolina in the period 1728-1742, and he was influential in redefining the dividing line between North and South Carolina. From 1736 to 1739 he owned Royal Land Grants. He was one of twelve patriarchs of the First or Scotch Presbyterian Church in Charleston, SC.

In 1705 in Fife, Scotland, he married Mary Gordon, who was born in Stralock, Scotland in 1687, daughter of Sir Arthur Gordon.

(born ca 1719, married James Dunbar) (source is listed below) SIR JAMES ABERCROMBY, 2 ND BARONET OF BIRKENBOG, succeeded his father (source listed below) and was served heir general to him on 13 December 1684.37 He m. Mary, daughter of Arthur Gordon, Advocate, son of Robert Gordon of Straloch, (c/m 31 July 1690. 38 She was served heir to her brother, Robert Gordon, Merchant in Aberdeen, on 2 May 173239), d. on 20 September 1734 and was father of : 1. Alexander Abercromby, bap. at Fordyce on 6 December 1692 and served as a Lieutenant in the army. He dsp before 1734 when his brother, Robert, succeeded to their father’s estate. 2. James Abercromby, bap. at Fordyce on 13 December 1693 and d. young. 3. Robert Abercromby, 3rd Baronet of Birkenbog, 4. Lewis Abercromby, bap. at Fordyce on 19 August 1697 and d. young. 5. George Abercombie, bap. at Fordyce on 23 August 1706. He went abroad and wrote a number of letters to his brother Sir Robert which are preserved in the family archive. He was in desperate circumstances by 1764 when he lamented being maintained by a negro wench and two daughters and on 26 May 1774, he wrote to that brother asking for assistance for his son John and telling of his daughter’s destitute condition.40 He m. in Mexico in 1746, Maria Ygnacia, daughter of John Ingleby,41 d. in December of 1776 35 GD185/5/3/5. 36 SRS Register of Edinburgh Apprentices. 37 C22/37/328. 38 GD185/5/7/15. 39 Services of Heirs.40 GD185/6/3. 41 GD185/6/3/10 & 12.
