John Thomas Abernethy (1925-1993) was my first cousin. His grandfather (same person as my grandfather) was John Thomas Abernathy (1854-1908). John Thomas Abernethy (1925-1993) was a son of my uncle, Rev. Nathan Hubert Abernethy and wife Sara Haskell Betts. Rev. Abernathy was District Superintendent of The Methodist Church at Jasper in Walker Co. AL when he died in 1949. Rev. Abernethy and his sons spelled their surname AbernEthy while my father and his other brothers (and their father) spelled it AbernAthy. (The name Abernathy comes from the Nethy River in Scotland, and Rev. Abernethy thought his spelling was therefore more correct.) John Thomas Abernathy (1854-1908) married Dorthula Nelson COLE (they are buried at Verbena in Chilton Co. AL). Earlier Abernathy ancestors are buried at Macedonia Primitive Baptist Cemetery in Chambers Co. AL.
