James Abernethy (1847- ?) was born in 1847 in the West Derby District of Liverpool. He was the eldest son of shipwright, James Abernethy and Isabella Sewell. [1]
By 1851 they were living in Grafton Street, Toxteth Park where they stayed until 1853. He had a younger brother Thomas. [2]
Sadly Thomas and 2 other younger brothers would die before brother Charles came along in 1856 and then a sister, Jane, in late 1858 when they had moved to Coburg Street, Toxteth Park. His mother died about a month after Jane's birth in January 1859.
In the summer of 1860, his father remarried and by 1861, James & his siblings are living in Coburg with his father & stepmother. [3]
He followed in his father's footsteps and became a shipwright. In 1860, giving an address on Gerard Street, Liverpool, he married Grace Bibby at St Peter's church on the 6th March 1860. [4] [5]
He seems to be living in Toxteth Park for the next few years and has 2 sons, James & John there. Maybe work was scarce but next child, Charles is born in the Prescot district in 1877 (and sadly died there in 1878 before his first birthday)
His next child, a daughter, Jane Grace, was born in Richard's Place, Cotter Street in Toxteth Park in mid 1879. (This address was likely that of his mother-in-law, Mary Bibby) [6]
His wife Grace died a few months later at her mother's address in Richard's Place and was buried in Toxteth Park Cemetery.
It seems baby Jane and her 2 older brothers were taken in by Grace's older sister, Mary Isaac, in Adelaide Place, Everton and it was there that little Jane died 2 months later. She was buried in St Mary's Cemetery.
James seems to have then left his son's with his sister-in-law, Mary whilst he went looking for work. The boys are in Everton in 1881 but James is possibly found in Cuerdley near Warrington, lodging at Moss End Farm and working as a carpenter. [7]
I cannot find what became of him from there.
